How problems on trains worksरेलगाड़ी संबंधी प्रश्न को समझिए
To pass a pole or a standing person, the train covers its own length. To pass a platform, bridge or tunnel, it covers its length plus that object’s length.
For two trains, use relative speed: add the speeds when they move towards each other, subtract when they move in the same direction. The distance is the sum of both lengths.
Convert units first. Lengths are usually in metres and speeds in km/h; multiply km/h by 5/18 to get m/s.
Each trick says when to use it, why it works and when it fails. Formula tricks are checked by code over their whole range.हर ट्रिक बताती है कि उसे कब इस्तेमाल करें, वह क्यों काम करती है और कब नहीं। सूत्र वाली ट्रिक्स को कोड से उनकी पूरी रेंज पर जाँचा गया है।

Times after meeting give the speed ratio
Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: Two trains start towards each other; after they meet, one takes a hours and the other b hours to finish.
Speed of first : speed of second = √b : √a.
Exampleउदाहरण
After meeting, A takes 9 h and B takes 4 h
→ A : B = √4 : √9 = 2 : 3
Why it works, and when it failsयह क्यों काम करती है, और कब नहीं
Why:क्यों: Before meeting both run the same time t. A covers what B still has to run, so u·t = v·b and v·t = u·a; dividing gives (u/v)² = b/a.
Limits:सीमाएँ: Both must start at the same moment.

Multiples of 18 km/h are whole m/s
Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: Any train question with speed in km/h and length in metres.
Examiners choose these speeds on purpose; spot them and skip the 5/18 step.
Exampleउदाहरण
72 km/h in m/s
→ 20 m/s
Why it works, and when it failsयह क्यों काम करती है, और कब नहीं
Why:क्यों: 1 km/h = 1000 m / 3600 s = 5/18 m/s, so 18k km/h = 5k m/s.
Limits:सीमाएँ: Other speeds still need × 5/18.

Example 1उदाहरण 1 · Trains crossing poles, platforms and other trains · Easyआसान
The Ahmedabad–Vadodara Shatabdi Express running at 108 km/h crosses a signal pole in 20 seconds. What is the length of the train (in metres)?
500 m
600 m
700 m
800 m
Answer:उत्तर:600 m
Speed = 108 × 5/18 = 30 m/s.
Length = 30 × 20 = 600 m.
Example 2उदाहरण 2 · Trains crossing poles, platforms and other trains · Mediumमध्यम
A 170 m long goods train running at 72 km/h crosses a 170 m long platform at Mumbai station. How many seconds does it take?
13 seconds
14 seconds
17 seconds
21 seconds
Answer:उत्तर:17 seconds
Distance = 170 + 170 = 340 m.
Speed = 72 × 5/18 = 20 m/s.
Time = 340 ÷ 20 = 17 s.
Example 3उदाहरण 3 · Trains crossing poles, platforms and other trains · Hardकठिन
Two trains, 130 m and 165 m long, run on parallel tracks between Mumbai and Pune at 108 km/h and 90 km/h in the same direction. How many seconds do they take to cross each other completely?
59 seconds
65 seconds
71 seconds
74 seconds
Answer:उत्तर:59 seconds
Relative speed = 18 km/h × 5/18 = 5 m/s.
Distance = 130 + 165 = 295 m.
Time = 295 ÷ 5 = 59 s.
Example 4उदाहरण 4 · Trains crossing poles, platforms and other trains · Mediumमध्यम
A 320 m long Duronto Express running at 72 km/h crosses a 240 m long platform at Lucknow station. How many seconds does it take?
21 seconds
28 seconds
34 seconds
35 seconds
Answer:उत्तर:28 seconds
Distance = 320 + 240 = 560 m.
Speed = 72 × 5/18 = 20 m/s.
Time = 560 ÷ 20 = 28 s.
Example 5उदाहरण 5 · Trains crossing poles, platforms and other trains · Mediumमध्यम
A 190 m long Vande Bharat Express running at 54 km/h crosses a 140 m long platform at Howrah station. How many seconds does it take?
17 seconds
20 seconds
22 seconds
24 seconds
Answer:उत्तर:22 seconds
Distance = 190 + 140 = 330 m.
Speed = 54 × 5/18 = 15 m/s.
Time = 330 ÷ 15 = 22 s.
Example 6उदाहरण 6 · Trains crossing poles, platforms and other trains · Mediumमध्यम
A 360 m long goods train running at 108 km/h crosses a 450 m long platform at Delhi station. How many seconds does it take?
24 seconds
27 seconds
30 seconds
32 seconds
Answer:उत्तर:27 seconds
Distance = 360 + 450 = 810 m.
Speed = 108 × 5/18 = 30 m/s.
Time = 810 ÷ 30 = 27 s.
Common mistakesआम गलतियाँ

Mixing km/h with metres and seconds.
Adding speeds for trains moving in the same direction.
Frequently asked questionsअक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Multiply by 5/18. For example, 72 km/h = 20 m/s.
What distance does a train cover when crossing a platform?
Its own length plus the platform’s length.
When do I add speeds?
When the two objects move towards each other (opposite directions).
