Per cent = per hundred
Shade 25 squares of a 100-square grid and you have 25%, which is also 1/4. To find 25% of ₹840, take a quarter: ₹210. Every percentage is just a fraction with 100 at the bottom.
- x% of N = N × x / 100
- 10% = move the decimal one place left
Summary
Per cent means "per hundred": 25% is 25 out of every 100, or 1/4. To find x% of a number, multiply by x and divide by 100; 15% of ₹360 is 360 × 15 / 100 = ₹54. Percentages let you compare different-sized things fairly: 45 out of 60 marks (75%) is a better score than 70 out of 100 (70%).
Toppers do most percentage sums with the fraction table: 1/2 = 50%, 1/3 = 33⅓%, 1/4 = 25%, 1/5 = 20%, 1/6 = 16⅔%, 1/8 = 12½%, 1/9 = 11⅑%, 1/10 = 10% and 1/12 = 8⅓%. So 12.5% of 640 is simply 640 ÷ 8 = 80, and 37.5% is 3/8.
Percentage change is always measured on the original value: change ÷ original × 100. A rise from ₹80 to ₹100 is 25%, but the fall from ₹100 back to ₹80 is only 20%, because the base changed. For two successive changes of a% and b%, the net change is a + b + ab/100 (use a minus sign for a fall), so +20% followed by −20% is a 4% fall, not zero.
