Most capitals are also the State’s best-known city: Patna, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai. These are rarely the hard questions.
The traps are capitals that are not the biggest or most famous city. Gujarat’s capital is Gandhinagar, not Ahmedabad; Kerala’s is Thiruvananthapuram, not Kochi; Assam’s is Dispur, a locality within Guwahati; Goa’s is Panaji.
Chandigarh is the capital of two States, Punjab and Haryana, and is also a Union Territory governed by the Centre. A question that asks which State it is the capital of has only one of the two among its options.
The north-eastern capitals are best learnt together: Itanagar, Dispur, Imphal, Shillong, Aizawl, Kohima, Agartala and Gangtok.

Expect the trap: the capital is not always the biggest city
Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: A capital question whose options include a famous city of that State.
If an option is the State’s most famous city, pause: setters add it as the trap.
Recall the short trap list: Gujarat (Gandhinagar), Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram), Assam (Dispur), Goa (Panaji).
Learn the eight north-eastern capitals as one set, each with its State: Arunachal–Itanagar, Assam–Dispur, Manipur–Imphal, Meghalaya–Shillong, Mizoram–Aizawl, Nagaland–Kohima, Tripura–Agartala, Sikkim–Gangtok.

Why:क्यों: Of the 25 States in this set, most capitals are the obvious city, so exam setters get their wrong answers from the few that are not. Knowing those few covers most of the hard questions.

Their capital arrangements are split between cities or have changed in recent years, so different sources key different answers. Check the latest official position before an exam.
Is Dispur the same as Guwahati?
Dispur is a locality within Guwahati and is the official capital of Assam, so “Dispur” is the expected answer.
