Circular arrangement puzzles seat a group around a round or square table and ask who sits where. They look harder than a straight row, but a circle has one big advantage: there are no ends, so the first person you place can go anywhere. Everything else is measured from that seat.

How circular arrangement works

Draw the circle as if you were looking down from the ceiling and fix one person at the top. A rotation of the whole table is the same seating, so this first placement costs you nothing and removes every duplicate drawing.

Directions depend on which way a person faces. Someone facing the centre has their left hand pointing clockwise on your drawing, and their right hand anticlockwise. Someone facing outward has it the other way round. Write a small arrow beside each name the moment you learn which way they face, and read every “left of” or “right of” clue from that person’s own position.

Place the clues that fix a seat relative to someone already drawn first: “immediately to the left”, “second to the right”, “opposite”. Keep two drawings when a clue allows two places, and use the negative clues (“is not a neighbour of”) at the end to remove the extra drawings.

Clockwise count + anticlockwise count = n − 2

Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: A question asks how many people sit between two people in one direction around a circle of n.

  1. Count the shorter way round (it is quicker).
  2. If the question asks for the other direction, subtract from n − 2.
Example

Eight around a table; one person sits between A and B going anticlockwise. How many going clockwise?

→ 8 − 2 − 1 = 5.

Why it works, and when it fails

Going round once from A back to A passes every other person exactly once. Everyone except A and B is between them on exactly one of the two sides, so the two counts add up to n − 2.

Limits:सीमाएँ: Each seat holds one person and every seat is filled. With empty chairs, count chairs instead of people.

Facing the centre, left means clockwise

Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: Any round-table clue that says “to the left of” or “to the right of” a person.

  1. Draw the table as seen from above.
  2. Facing the centre: left = clockwise, right = anticlockwise.
  3. Facing outward: swap them (left = anticlockwise).
Example

Six friends face the centre. A is second to the left of B. Where is A?

→ Start at B and move two seats clockwise.

Why it works, and when it fails

A person facing the centre has the centre straight ahead; turning that direction a quarter-turn to their left gives the clockwise tangent of the circle at their seat (seen from above). Facing outward reverses the forward direction, so the left-hand side reverses too.

Limits:सीमाएँ: Only for drawings seen from above. If a book draws the table from below or mirrors it, the words “clockwise” and “anticlockwise” swap.

Common mistakes

  • Using your own left and right instead of the seated person’s, especially for people facing outward.
  • Counting “how many sit between” the short way round when the question asks for a particular direction.
  • Fixing a second person’s seat as if it were the first, which quietly rules out valid seatings.

Frequently asked questions

Facing the centre, is left clockwise or anticlockwise?

Clockwise, when the table is drawn as seen from above. Stand at the bottom of the circle facing the middle and your left hand points to the left of the page, which is the clockwise direction from the bottom of a circle.

How do I find who sits opposite someone?

Only an even number of seats has an exact opposite. With n seats, count n/2 places in either direction from the person; both directions land on the same seat.

What changes when some people face outward?

Only their own left and right. A clue such as “A sits second to the left of B” is read from B, so check which way B faces before counting.
