Paper Folding and Punchingकागज़ मोड़ना और छेद करना questions and answersप्रश्न और उत्तर

In paper folding questions a square sheet is folded once or twice, punched, and opened out. Every answer comes from one idea: a crease acts like a mirror, so each hole gets a partner the same distance away on the other side.

How paper folding and punching worksकागज़ मोड़ना और छेद करना को समझिए

When the sheet is folded, the punch goes through every layer. Opening one crease reveals the layer that was folded underneath, and the holes in that layer are mirror images of the top holes in the crease. So a hole near the crease has a partner near the crease; a hole near the edge has a partner near the opposite edge.

With two folds, undo them in reverse order: first the last fold, then the first. Each unfolding doubles the number of holes, so one punch through a sheet folded twice gives four holes, symmetric about both creases.

A diagonal crease is a mirror too, just a slanted one. Folding along the diagonal from the top-left corner to the bottom-right corner swaps the across and down positions of every hole: a hole in row 1, column 3 has a partner in row 3, column 1.

A diagonal crease swaps row and column

Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: The sheet is folded along a diagonal and you need the partner of a hole.

  1. Crease from top-left to bottom-right: a hole in row r, column c has its partner in row c, column r.
  2. Crease from top-right to bottom-left on an n × n grid: row r, column c pairs with row n + 1 − c, column n + 1 − r.
Exampleउदाहरण

5 × 5 sheet, crease top-left to bottom-right, hole in row 1, column 4.

→ Partner in row 4, column 1.

Why it works, and when it failsयह क्यों काम करती है, और कब नहीं

Why:क्यों: The main diagonal is the line where across = down, so reflecting in it exchanges the two coordinates. The other diagonal is the line across + down = n, and reflecting in it sends (x, y) to (n − y, n − x).

Limits:सीमाएँ: Only for a square sheet; a rectangle’s diagonal is not a line of symmetry, so folding along it does not lay the halves on each other.

Each fold doubles the holes

Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: A sheet is folded one or more times and punched; options show different numbers of holes.

  1. Count the holes punched: p.
  2. Count the folds: f.
  3. The opened sheet has p × 2^f holes. Reject every option with another count.
Exampleउदाहरण

Folded twice and punched with 2 holes. How many holes when opened?

→ 2 × 2² = 8.

Why it works, and when it failsयह क्यों काम करती है, और कब नहीं

Why:क्यों: The punch goes through every layer, and f folds stack 2^f layers. Each layer gets its own copy of every hole, and no two copies land in the same place unless a hole sits on a crease.

Limits:सीमाएँ: A hole punched exactly on a crease opens into one hole, not two, so the count is lower.

Common mistakesआम गलतियाँ

  • Copying holes by sliding them across the crease instead of reflecting them, which reverses their order.
  • Undoing only one fold of two, so the answer has half the holes it should.
  • Reflecting across the wrong line, for example the vertical centre line when the paper was folded top to bottom.

Frequently asked questionsअक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

How many holes appear when I unfold the paper?

The number punched times 2 for every fold, as long as no hole sits exactly on a crease. Use this count to reject options before looking at positions.

What happens to a hole punched on the fold line?

It does not get a separate partner; it opens out into a single hole (often drawn as a larger or a half-shaped hole) centred on the crease.

Which fold do I undo first?

The last one. The sheet opens in the reverse order to the way it was folded, and each crease reflects all the holes found so far.
