Mirror and Water Imagesदर्पण और जल प्रतिबिंबquestions and answersप्रश्न और उत्तर
Mirror and water image questions show a figure and a reflecting line, and ask which option is its reflection. They look visual, but each one is a single rule: one direction flips, the other stays exactly as it was.

How mirror and water images worksदर्पण और जल प्रतिबिंब को समझिए
A mirror held upright on the right (or left) of a figure swaps left and right. A point near the mirror stays near the mirror; a point far from it stays far, now on the other side. Nothing moves up or down, so the top of the figure is still the top.
A water image is the reflection in a horizontal line, such as the surface of a lake below the figure. Now top and bottom swap and left–right positions stay. An arrow pointing up becomes an arrow pointing down at the same left–right position.
Examiners always include the figure turned through 180° as an option, because it looks reflected. A half turn swaps both left–right and top–bottom; it is what you get by taking the mirror image and then the water image. A single reflection never does both.

Cross out the 180° turn first
Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: Two options both look “reflected” and you need to rule one out fast.
Find the option that is the question figure turned upside down (swapped both ways). Cross it out.
Of the rest, the mirror image keeps the top at the top; the water image keeps the left side on the left.
Exampleउदाहरण
Options show the arrowhead at top-right, bottom-right, bottom-left. The question has it at top-left. Mirror image?
→ Bottom-right is the half turn, bottom-left the water image; top-right is the mirror image.
Why it works, and when it failsयह क्यों काम करती है, और कब नहीं
Why:क्यों: The half turn equals a mirror image only when the figure looks the same in water (it has a horizontal line of symmetry), and equals a water image only when it looks the same in a mirror. For a figure with no symmetry, the half turn is never the answer.
Limits:सीमाएँ: If the figure is symmetric about a horizontal or vertical line, the half turn can coincide with the right answer; check the symmetry first.

A reflection flips one direction; a 180° turn flips both
Use it when:कब इस्तेमाल करें: Any mirror or water image question, before you compare the options in detail.
Mirror on the side: left and right swap, top and bottom stay.
Water below: top and bottom swap, left and right stay.
Doing both (mirror image of the water image) is the same as turning the figure through 180°.
Exampleउदाहरण
An arrow at the top-left points right. Where is it in the water image?
→ Bottom-left, still pointing right: only top and bottom swap.
Why it works, and when it failsयह क्यों काम करती है, और कब नहीं
Why:क्यों: A vertical mirror sends (x, y) to (w − x, y) and water sends (x, y) to (x, h − y). Applying both sends (x, y) to (w − x, h − y), which is exactly a half turn about the centre.
Limits:सीमाएँ: For mirrors placed on the side or below. A mirror at an angle (a diagonal mirror) swaps the across and down positions instead.

Example 1उदाहरण 1 · Mirror images of figures · Easyआसान
A mirror is held along the dashed line to the right of the question figure. Which answer figure is its mirror image?
A
B
C
D
Answer:उत्तर:D
In a mirror image every point keeps its height and moves to the same distance on the other side: (x, y) → (3 − x, y).
The arrowhead at (1, 0) goes to (2, 0), and every stroke moves the same way.
Only figure (D) has every part in its reflected place, so the answer is (D).
Example 2उदाहरण 2 · Water images of figures · Easyआसान
The dashed line below the question figure is the surface of still water. Which answer figure is its water image (reflection in the water)?
A
B
C
D
Answer:उत्तर:C
In a water image every point keeps its left–right position and moves to the same distance on the other side vertically: (x, y) → (x, 3 − y).
The arrowhead at (1, 1) goes to (1, 2), and every stroke moves the same way.
Only figure (C) has every part in its reflected place, so the answer is (C).

In a mirror image every point keeps its height and moves to the same distance on the other side: (x, y) → (4 − x, y).
The arrowhead at (3, 0) goes to (1, 0), and every stroke, dot moves the same way.
Only figure (C) has every part in its reflected place, so the answer is (C).

Common mistakesआम गलतियाँ
Choosing the 180° turn: it swaps both directions, while a reflection swaps only one.
Confusing mirror and water images, especially when the options are drawn small. Ask first: is the line beside the figure or below it?
Reflecting the main strokes but leaving a small dot or circle where it was. Every part of the figure is reflected.
Frequently asked questionsअक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
How do I tell a mirror image from a water image quickly?
Pick one feature, such as an arrowhead. In a mirror image it stays at the same height and moves to the other side; in a water image it stays on the same side and moves from top to bottom.
Does it matter whether the mirror is on the left or the right?
No. A vertical mirror on either side gives the same image; only its position on the page changes. Likewise, a horizontal mirror above or below gives the same water image.
Which letters look the same in a mirror?
Capital letters with a vertical line of symmetry, such as A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X and Y, look unchanged in a vertical mirror. Letters with a horizontal line of symmetry, such as B, C, D, E, H, I, K, O and X, look unchanged in water.
