Cost price and selling price

A Jaipur shopkeeper buys a kurta for ₹400 and sells it for ₹500. Profit = ₹100. Profit per cent = 100/400 × 100 = 25%. The base is the cost price, because that is the money the shopkeeper put in.

  • Profit% = profit / CP × 100
  • Loss% = loss / CP × 100

Summary

Cost price (CP) is what the seller paid; selling price (SP) is what the buyer pays. Profit = SP − CP and loss = CP − SP, and profit or loss per cent is always calculated on the cost price unless the question says otherwise. A kurta bought for ₹400 and sold for ₹500 gives a profit of ₹100, which is 25% on cost.

The marked price (MP), or list price, is printed on the tag. A discount is always a percentage of the marked price, and SP = MP − discount. Shopkeepers mark up above cost so they can offer a discount and still make a profit: CP ₹400, MP ₹600, 10% discount gives SP ₹540 and a 35% profit.

Use multipliers to save time: SP = CP × (100 + profit%)/100 and CP = SP × 100/(100 + profit%). Two successive discounts of a% and b% equal a single discount of a + b − ab/100, so 20% and 10% together are 28%, not 30%.
