How it works

  • Banks close on every Sunday and on the second and fourth Saturday of each month (RBI rule since September 2015). First, third and fifth Saturdays are working days.
  • On top of that, each state follows the holiday list of its RBI regional office, declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. We use RBI's 2026 list for every office.
  • Holidays fixed by the moon (Id, Muharram, Milad-un-Nabi) can move by a day at short notice. When in doubt, call your branch.
  • UPI, ATMs, net and mobile banking keep working on bank holidays; branches and cheque clearing do not.

Questions people ask

Are banks closed on all Saturdays?

No. Since September 2015 banks close only on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. The first, third and fifth Saturdays are full working days unless a holiday falls on them.

Where does this holiday list come from?

From the Reserve Bank of India's holiday list for each regional office (holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881). Every bank branch in a state follows its regional office list.

Can the date of Eid or Muharram change?

Yes. Holidays that depend on sighting the moon can be shifted by the state government, sometimes a day before. RBI then updates its list. Check with your branch for those days.

Do UPI and ATMs work on a bank holiday?

Yes. UPI, IMPS, ATMs, net banking and mobile banking work as usual. NEFT and RTGS run all days. Only branch work and cheque clearing wait for the next working day.

Why are banks closed on 1 April?

In most states RBI lists 1 April as a holiday for the public so that banks can close their yearly accounts. Staff still work that day.

Is the 2027 list here?

Not yet. RBI had not published 2027 bank holidays when we last checked (1 November 2026). For 2027 dates we only apply the Sunday and Saturday rule and say so on the answer.
