Bank data: Razorpay IFSC dataset, v2.0.62 (2026-09-01). Post office data: India Post directory, snapshot of 2024-05-05. Data may be out of date; confirm with your bank or post office.

How it works

  • Bank data comes from the open Razorpay IFSC dataset (MIT licence), which compiles RBI and bank lists. Post office data comes from India Post's All India Pincode Directory on data.gov.in (Government Open Data License India).
  • Both are saved on this site as small files. Your search runs in your browser and only loads the small file it needs. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
  • IFSC format: 4 letters for the bank, then 0, then 6 letters or digits for the branch. PIN format: 6 digits, the first one 1 to 9.
  • The first digit of a PIN shows its postal zone, so you see the region as soon as you type it.
  • Banks merge and close branches, and post offices change. Before sending money or a parcel, confirm with your bank or post office.

Questions people ask

What is an IFSC code?

IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11 character code that identifies a bank branch for NEFT, RTGS and IMPS transfers. The first 4 letters are the bank, the 5th character is always 0, and the last 6 identify the branch. It is printed on your cheque book and passbook.

What is a MICR code?

MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) is a 9 digit code printed at the bottom of cheques. It identifies the bank and branch for cheque clearing. The first 3 digits are the city, the next 3 the bank and the last 3 the branch.

How do PIN codes work?

A PIN (Postal Index Number) has 6 digits. The first digit is the postal zone, the first two together are the sub-zone or postal circle, and the first three are the sorting district. The last three digits point to the delivery post office.

Why does one PIN code show many post offices?

A head office or sub office delivers mail, and the smaller branch offices in villages around it often share the same PIN code. The list shows each office, its type and whether it delivers mail.

What do head office, sub office and branch office mean?

A head office (HO) is the main post office of a postal division. Sub offices (SO) report to it, and branch offices (BO) are small offices, often in villages, that report to a sub office.

Can I trust this data for a money transfer?

The data may be out of date. Banks merge, rename and close branches, and an old IFSC can stop working. Always confirm the IFSC with your bank, your cheque book or the bank's website before a large transfer, and confirm PIN codes with India Post.

Do UPI payments need an IFSC?

No. UPI uses a UPI ID or mobile number. IFSC is needed when you add a beneficiary by account number for NEFT, RTGS or IMPS.
