How it works

  • Slabs, standard deduction, rebate and surcharge come from the Income-tax Act, 2025 (in force from 1 April 2026) and the Finance Bill 2026 memorandum, which kept the rates unchanged.
  • New regime (section 202, the default): nil up to ₹4 lakh, then 5% to 30%. Salaried people get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, and the section 156 rebate makes tax nil up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, with marginal relief just above it.
  • Old regime (if you opt out under section 202(4)): exemption of ₹2.5 lakh, ₹3 lakh at 60 and ₹5 lakh at 80, a ₹50,000 standard deduction, a ₹12,500 rebate up to ₹5 lakh, and deductions such as section 123 (old 80C), health insurance, home-loan interest and NPS.
  • Taxable income and tax are rounded to the nearest ₹10. Capital gains at special rates, business income and non-residents are not covered: use a CA or the e-filing portal for those.

Questions people ask

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in 2026-27?

Under the new regime, yes for resident individuals: the section 156 rebate of up to ₹60,000 cancels the tax when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Income taxed at special rates, such as most capital gains, does not get this rebate.

What is marginal relief above ₹12 lakh?

If your taxable income is a little above ₹12 lakh, your tax cannot be more than the amount by which your income crosses ₹12 lakh. For ₹12.1 lakh, tax is ₹10,000 plus cess, not ₹61,500. The relief fades out at about ₹12.7 lakh.

Which regime should I choose?

For most salaried people without a home loan, the new regime costs less. The old regime can win when your deductions (HRA, section 123 investments, health insurance, home-loan interest, NPS) are large. The calculator shows the deductions at which the two cost the same.

What changed with the Income-tax Act, 2025?

From 1 April 2026 the 1961 Act is replaced. "Previous year" and "assessment year" become one "tax year", and sections are renumbered: 87A is now 156, 80C is now 123, 80D is now 126 and 115BAC is now 202. The tax rates for 2026-27 did not change.

When is the return for tax year 2026-27 due?

Returns for 2026-27 are filed from April 2027. For ITR-1 and ITR-2 the due date is 31 July 2027; the Finance Bill 2026 moved non-audit business and profession cases to 31 August. Check the e-filing portal for the final dates.
