Where does the stop go?
Priya wants Desi Chai Ltd (fictional) at ₹250 because it bounced off support near ₹242. If it falls below ₹240, the support idea is broken. So her stop is ₹240: a chart reason, decided before she buys.
Summary
A stop loss is the price at which your trade idea is proven wrong and you exit. Decide it before you enter, from the chart (for example just below support), not from how much you hope to make. Then size the position from it: quantity = the rupees you accept losing ÷ the distance from entry to stop. Many careful traders risk about 1% of their capital per trade, so even ten losses in a row cost about 10%, not everything.
Risk to reward compares the distance to your target with the distance to your stop. At 1:2, you can be right only 40% of the time and still come out ahead before costs. The most dangerous habit is moving the stop further away when price approaches it: a planned small loss becomes an unplanned large one. Big bets per trade do not just raise returns, they raise the chance of ruin, and once capital is gone no edge can bring it back.
