Griha pravesh ke liye kaun sa mahina shubh hai?
Classical texts favour six lunar months for entering a new house: Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Kartika, Margashirsha, Magha and Phalguna. Our calculator only allows dates in these months, which is the main reason the list is shorter than the vivah list and why some calendar months are empty.
On top of the month, the window must have:
- Nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati (the fixed and soft stars).
- Tithi: Shukla 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11 or 13, or Krishna 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 or 10. Rikta tithis, Ashtami, Dwadashi, Purnima and Amavasya are excluded.
- Weekday: not Sunday or Tuesday.
- No Vishti (Bhadra) karana, and not during Vyatipata or Vaidhriti yoga.
- Season blocks: not in Kharmas, Chaturmas, Holashtak or Pitru Paksha, and not while Venus or Jupiter is combust.
Why no griha pravesh dates in January, April or July to October 2027?
In these months no day meets every condition at once. Kharmas blocks the first half of January, and Holashtak, the Sun in Meena and Chaitra (not a favoured month) cover much of March and April, while the remaining days miss the nakshatra, tithi or weekday rules. July to October is Chaturmas, when house warmings, like weddings, are traditionally postponed.
TipIf your possession date falls in a month with no muhurat, many families move their belongings in first and hold the griha pravesh puja on the next good date. Ask your pandit what your tradition allows.
How to plan your griha pravesh, step by step
- Fix the earliest date the house will be ready: power, water, gas and keys in hand.
- Open griha pravesh muhurat and pick dates after that, with a comfortable time window.
- Check the day on the panchang for Rahu kaal so the entry does not start inside it.
- Share two or three options with your pandit, who fixes the exact time.
- Invite family early; May and November dates are popular for both weddings and house warmings.
Apoorva, sapoorva and dwandwah griha pravesh
Tradition separates three kinds of entry. Apoorva is the first entry into a newly built home, which is what these rules are strictest about. Sapoorva is moving back into a home after a long absence, such as after travel abroad. Dwandwah is re-entry after repair or rebuilding, for example after a fire or flood. Many pandits apply lighter rules to sapoorva and dwandwah entries, and renting a flat is often treated more flexibly still.
Whatever your tradition, these dates are panchang shuddhi for New Delhi only. Different cities can shift a window across midnight or sunrise, so check with your local panchang or pandit before you print invitations.
What is done on the griha pravesh day?
Customs vary a lot between regions and communities, but many families follow a similar shape for the day:
- Cleaning and decoration the day before: toran of mango leaves at the main door, rangoli or kolam at the entrance.
- Entry at the muhurat time, usually with the right foot first, often carrying a kalash of water or a lamp.
- Ganesh puja and Vastu shanti or a havan, led by the family priest, to bless the home.
- Boiling milk in the new kitchen until it overflows, a widely shared sign of plenty.
- Feeding guests and, in many homes, offering food to a priest or to people in need.
There is no single correct version. Some families keep it to a short prayer and a meal; others hold a full day of rituals. What matters most is that it suits your family and your new neighbours. For timing on the day itself, the panchang shows Rahu kaal and the choghadiya so the entry can avoid an inauspicious slice.
TipTell the housing society or building manager about the date early, especially if you plan a havan, so that smoke alarms, parking and lifts are sorted before guests arrive.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best month for griha pravesh in 2027?
By our New Delhi count, May 2027 has the most days (7), followed by February (6) and June (5). The classical favoured months are Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Kartika, Margashirsha, Magha and Phalguna.
Is griha pravesh allowed during Chaturmas?
Traditionally no. From July to October 2027 our list has no dates. Families who must move then often shift their things and hold the puja on the next good date.
Do I need a muhurat for a rented house?
It is a personal and family choice. Many people do a simple puja on any convenient day for a rented home. The strict rules are mainly for a newly built home.
Can I do griha pravesh on a Sunday?
The rules our calculator follows avoid Sunday and Tuesday for griha pravesh. Some families follow other customs, so ask your own pandit.

Most dates hold across India, but the list is calculated for New Delhi. Windows near sunrise or midnight can shift, so confirm with your local panchang or pandit.
