How to Read Your Kundli: Lagna, 12 Houses, Rashi and Nakshatra Explained
What is a kundli, in simple words?
A janam kundli is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It shows where the Sun, Moon and planets were along the zodiac, divided into 12 signs (rashis) of 30 degrees each. Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed against the stars, so positions are shifted by the ayanamsa, about 24 degrees today. Most Indian software, and ours, uses the Lahiri ayanamsa adopted for the official Indian ephemeris.
You need three things to make one: date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. The time matters most. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so a birth time that is off by even 15 minutes can change the lagna for people born near a boundary.

The lagna (ascendant) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It is the anchor of the whole chart: the sign that holds the lagna becomes the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd house, and so on around the circle. This is called the whole-sign house system and it is what most printed kundlis in India use.
In the North Indian diamond chart, the houses are fixed in place. The top centre diamond is always house 1, and the number written inside it tells you the lagna sign (1 is Mesha, 2 Vrishabha, up to 12 Meena). Houses then run anticlockwise. In the South Indian square chart, the signs are fixed instead, and the lagna is marked with a diagonal line or the word Asc, so you count houses clockwise from that box.
TipIf you do not know your birth time, a kundli can still show your Moon sign and nakshatra, but not the lagna or houses. Our tool then counts houses from the Moon, a traditional fallback called Chandra lagna.
What do the 12 houses in a kundli mean?
Each house is traditionally linked with areas of life. These are the meanings most textbooks agree on:
| House | Common name | Traditionally linked with |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Lagna, tanu bhava | Self, body, temperament, overall direction |
| 2nd | Dhana bhava | Family, speech, savings, food |
| 3rd | Sahaja bhava | Siblings, courage, short travel, communication |
| 4th | Sukha bhava | Mother, home, vehicles, inner peace |
| 5th | Putra bhava | Children, learning, creativity, past merit |
| 6th | Ripu bhava | Debts, disputes, daily work, health routines |
| 7th | Kalatra bhava | Marriage, partners, business partnerships |
| 8th | Ayu bhava | Longevity, sudden change, inheritance, research |
| 9th | Dharma bhava | Father, teachers, faith, long journeys, luck |
| 10th | Karma bhava | Career, status, public life |
| 11th | Labha bhava | Gains, income, friends, wishes fulfilled |
| 12th | Vyaya bhava | Expenses, foreign lands, sleep, letting go |
A house is read through three things: the sign in it, the planets placed in it, and the lord of that sign (for example Mars rules Mesha and Vrishchika). An empty house is not a bad house. It simply means its results are read through its lord.
Rashi, nakshatra and pada: what is my Moon sign?
Your rashi in everyday Indian use is your Moon sign, not your Sun sign. Daily rashifal columns are written by Moon sign, which is why your Western star sign usually differs.
The zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) of 13 degrees 20 minutes each, and every nakshatra into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. The nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth is your janma nakshatra. It sets the starting point of the Vimshottari dasha, is used in kundli milan, and gives the traditional first syllable for a name (naam akshar).
For example, a Moon at 15 degrees of Vrishabha falls in Rohini nakshatra, pada 2. Our kundli tool shows the nakshatra, pada, naam akshar and the nakshatra lord for you, so there is nothing to look up by hand.
Kundli kaise padhe: a step-by-step method
- Note the lagna and its lord. Where the lagna lord sits is read as where your attention naturally goes.
- Read the Moon: its sign (rashi), house and nakshatra. The Moon is treated as the mind and emotional life.
- Go house by house for the areas you care about. For career, look at the 10th house, its lord and planets in it. For marriage, the 7th.
- Check planet strength (dignity): a planet in its own sign or exalted sign is read as strong; in its debilitated sign as weak. The planet table in our tool labels this.
- Look at the running dasha. Classical astrologers say a promise in the chart shows up mainly during the dasha of the planets involved. See our Vimshottari dasha guide.
- Only then look at doshas such as Manglik or Sade Sati, and read their cancellations too. Most charts have something called a dosha somewhere.
Which planets are good or bad in a kundli?
Classical texts call Jupiter and Venus natural benefics, and a well-placed Moon and Mercury usually join them. Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu are natural malefics, and the Sun is mildly so. But no planet is simply good or bad. The same Saturn that is called hard is also the planet of discipline and patience, and a malefic in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house is traditionally read as helpful.
Watch outBe careful with anyone who reads a single placement and predicts disaster, then sells a costly remedy. Even within jyotish, a chart is meant to be read as a whole, with strengths alongside weaknesses.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a kundli without birth time?
Yes, but only partly. Without a birth time you get the Moon sign, nakshatra and planet signs, but not the lagna or houses. Our tool then uses the Moon as the first house and says so clearly.
Is lagna the same as rashi?
No. The lagna is the sign rising in the east at birth and changes about every two hours. The rashi is the sign the Moon was in, which changes about every two and a quarter days.
Why does my kundli differ between two websites?
Usually because of a different ayanamsa, house system or birth place coordinates, or a time zone mistake. We use Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses, the defaults of most Indian software, so results normally match printed kundlis.
Which chart should I read, North or South Indian?
Both show the same positions; only the layout differs. North Indian charts fix the houses, South Indian charts fix the signs. Use whichever your family is used to; our tool can show either.
Is my birth data uploaded when I make a kundli here?
No. The kundli is calculated in your browser on your own device. Your name, date and place of birth are not sent to our servers.

Jyotish is a traditional belief system, not a science that can predict events. We explain how the classical rules work and calculate them carefully, but nothing here should cause fear or replace advice from a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser. Big decisions such as marriage deserve the full picture, not a single chart factor.
