Authority letter format, filled in for you
An authority letter lets another person do a specific task for you, such as collecting a document or submitting a form, when you cannot go yourself. Fill in your details, the authorised person, exactly what they may do and the dates, then download it as Word or PDF.
Both of you sign it, and the authorised person carries it with their ID proof.

This is a general format to save you time, not legal advice. Read every clause, change what does not fit your situation, and for a dispute or a large amount, consult a lawyer.
What is an authority letter?
This is a standard Indian authorisation letter addressed to the office concerned. It names you and the authorised person with their relation and ID proof, states the exact task, limits the authority to the dates you choose, and has space for the authorised person’s specimen signature attested by you. Aadhaar and PAN numbers are masked by default.
When do you need an authority letter?
- A family member must collect your debit card, cheque book, passport or certificate.
- Someone has to submit a form, application or documents for you at a bank, college or government office.
- You are out of town or unwell and need a person to complete a formality for a few days.
- A courier or office asks for an authorisation letter to hand over your parcel or documents.
Documents needed for an authority letter
- Your ID proof (a self-attested copy).
- The authorised person’s ID proof (a copy, and the original to show).
- Any reference number or receipt for the task, such as an application number.
How to make an authority letter: stamp paper, signing, submitting
- Fill in your details and the office the letter is addressed to.
- Choose the type of work and write exactly what the person may do. Keep it narrow.
- Set the dates the authority is valid for.
- Fill in the authorised person’s details and ID proof.
- Download, print, sign it yourself, have the authorised person sign in the specimen box, and attest their signature.
- The authorised person takes the letter, both ID copies and their original ID to the office.
Common mistakes
- Writing a broad purpose like "all work". Offices may refuse it, and it gives more power than you mean to give.
- Leaving out the dates, so the letter can be used again later.
- Not enclosing ID copies of both people.
- Forgetting the specimen signature, which the office compares when the person signs for receipt.
Questions people ask
Will every office accept an authority letter?
Many do for simple tasks, but each bank or office has its own rules, and some tasks need you in person or a different form. Check with the office before sending someone.
Is an authority letter the same as a power of attorney?
No. An authority letter is a simple letter for one specific task and short period. A power of attorney is a formal legal document, usually on stamp paper and often registered, for wider or longer powers.
Should I write the full Aadhaar number?
Usually not. The letter shows only the last four digits by default. Attach a masked Aadhaar copy, which UIDAI lets you download, unless the office asks for the full number.
Can I write it in Hindi?
Yes. Switch the document language to Hindi and the whole letter is written in Hindi, with the right form for a man or a woman.
Is my data safe?
Yes. Everything is made on your device, in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, and the draft stays only on this device until you clear it.
