Consumer legal notice to a company, filled in for you

A legal notice tells the company in writing what went wrong, what you want (refund, replacement, repair or compensation) and by when, and warns that you will approach the Consumer Commission if they do not act. It is not compulsory before a complaint, but it often settles the matter and shows the Commission you gave the company a fair chance.

Fill the form, download it and send it by registered post AD, speed post or email.

Opening the form…

This is a general format to save you time, not legal advice. Read every clause, change what does not fit your situation, and for a dispute or a large amount, consult a lawyer.

What is a legal notice to a company?

A notice from you, the consumer, to the seller, manufacturer or service provider under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. It records the purchase, the amount paid, the defect or deficiency, the steps you have taken, your demand and a deadline, usually 15 days. You can send it yourself or through a lawyer.

When do you need a legal notice to a company?

  • A product is defective and the company keeps sending technicians without fixing it.
  • An online order was not delivered, or the refund for a returned item has not come.
  • A service was poor or incomplete: a builder, airline, insurer, telecom company, courier or coaching institute.
  • Customer care has stopped replying and you want a written record before going to the Consumer Commission.

Documents needed for a legal notice to a company

  • Invoice, order confirmation or receipt showing the amount paid.
  • Warranty card, if it is a product.
  • Complaint ticket numbers, emails, chats and service reports.
  • Photos or videos of the defect.
  • The company’s registered address (from the invoice, website or MCA records) and customer care email.

How to make a legal notice to a company: stamp paper, signing, submitting

  1. Optionally, first register the grievance with the National Consumer Helpline (1915 or consumerhelpline.gov.in); it can mediate with many companies.
  2. Fill this form: your details, the company, the purchase, the problem, the steps you took and your demand.
  3. Download the PDF, sign it and send it by registered post AD or speed post to the registered or office address, and email it to customer care if you have the address.
  4. Keep the postal receipt, the tracking result or AD card, and a signed copy of the notice.
  5. If the company does not act within the deadline, file a consumer complaint on e-Jagriti with the notice and proof of delivery attached.

Common mistakes

  • Sending it only to a customer care email that nobody reads. Post it to the registered office as well.
  • Leaving out the invoice number, date and amount paid. The Commission decides forum and fees on the amount paid.
  • Demanding an unrealistic compensation figure. Ask for what you can explain.
  • Waiting too long. A consumer complaint must be filed within two years of the problem arising.

Questions people ask

Is a legal notice compulsory before a consumer complaint?

No. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 does not require a notice before filing. It is still useful: many companies settle on receiving one, and it shows the Commission you tried to resolve the matter.

Do I need a lawyer to send a legal notice?

No. A consumer can send a notice personally, as this draft does. A lawyer’s notice may carry more weight with some companies, but it is not required.

How many days should I give the company?

Fifteen days is common; you can choose between 7 and 60 days in the form. Give a deadline the company can realistically meet.

Which Consumer Commission will hear my complaint?

It depends on the amount paid: the District Commission up to ₹50 lakh, the State Commission above that up to ₹2 crore, and the National Commission above ₹2 crore. You can file where you live or work.

Is my data safe?

Yes. The form, preview, Word and PDF are made inside your browser on this device. Nothing you type is uploaded. This is a drafting aid, not legal advice.
