Who needs this

  • Anyone applying for a first passport (fresh), or a new booklet because the old one is expiring, expired, or out of pages (re-issue).
  • Children: below 18 get a 5-year passport (or till 18). Between 15 and 18 you can choose a 10-year passport at the adult fee.
  • Tatkaal is for urgent cases. No proof of urgency is needed, but some categories cannot apply under Tatkaal (see the booklet).

Steps

  1. Register or log in on passportindia.gov.in (the official Passport Seva site).
  2. Choose Fresh or Re-issue, Normal or Tatkaal, and 36 or 60 pages. Fill the form online and check every spelling against your documents.
  3. Pay the fee online and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK.
  4. Go on the date with the appointment receipt and original documents plus one set of self-attested copies.
  5. At the PSK: token, document check, photo and fingerprints, then the officer’s approval.
  6. Police verification is done before or after issue, depending on your case. Track your file and the speed post on the portal.

Documents

  • Proof of present address (for example Aadhaar, voter ID, bank passbook, utility bill, rent agreement as allowed in the booklet)
  • Proof of date of birth (for example birth certificate, school leaving certificate, PAN, Aadhaar, driving licence)
  • Old passport, for re-issue (and its first and last pages self-attested)
  • For minors: parents’ passports or address proof, and Annexure D if needed
  • Use the Document Advisor on the portal for your exact case

How long it takes

  • Normal, when police verification is not needed or is done after issue: the booklet says the passport is expected to be dispatched on the third working day, not counting the day you submit.
  • Tatkaal, when police verification is not needed: expected dispatch within one working day, not counting the day you submit.
  • Tatkaal with police verification before issue: within three working days of receiving a "Recommendatory" police report.

Common mistakes

  • Using look-alike websites that charge "service fees". The only official site is passportindia.gov.in.
  • Name or date of birth spelt differently on different documents. Fix the mismatch before you apply.
  • Booking Tatkaal in a category that cannot use it (the booklet lists them).
  • Leaving your phone off when the police verification officer calls.
  • Forgetting to carry originals; photocopies alone are not accepted at the PSK.
