Cyber Fraud Ho Gaya? What to Do in the First Hour (1930 Checklist)

By IndiaDigital editors5 min readहिंदी में पढ़ें

What to do in the first hour after online fraud

  1. Call 1930, the national cyber crime helpline, and report the fraud. Note the acknowledgement or complaint number.
  2. File the complaint on cybercrime.gov.in with the UTR or transaction IDs, amounts, times and the accounts or UPI IDs the money went to.
  3. Call your bank on the number printed on your card or in its app. Block cards, UPI and net banking if needed, and report the unauthorised transactions.
  4. Save evidence: screenshots of chats, SMS, call logs, payment screens and any links or apps. Do not delete anything.
  5. Change passwords from a safe device and uninstall any screen-sharing or unknown app you installed for the scammer.
  6. Give a written complaint at your police station or cyber cell, and report the scam numbers on Chakshu.

Cyber fraud ho gaya to sabse pehle kya kare?

Call 1930. It is the national cyber crime helpline run with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) of the Ministry of Home Affairs. When you report quickly, the complaint can be passed to the banks and wallets involved so they can try to hold the money before it moves to the next account. That is why people call the first hour the “golden hour”.

If the line is busy, keep trying and file online on cybercrime.gov.in in the meantime. Do both: the call starts the process fast, and the online complaint gives you a written record with all the details.

Watch outDo not wait to “see if the money comes back”, and do not keep negotiating with the scammer. Every minute gives them time to move the money on.

Online fraud complaint ke liye kya details chahiye?

Keep these ready before or during the call. Missing details slow things down, but do not delay reporting just to collect everything.

Bank ko kab aur kaise batana hai?

Call your bank right after 1930, on the number printed on your debit card or inside the bank’s official app. Never use a “customer care” number from a search result or social media; fake numbers are a scam of their own.

  • Ask the bank to block your debit and credit cards, UPI and net banking if your details or device may be compromised.
  • Report each unauthorised transaction and ask for a complaint reference number.
  • Follow up in writing (email or branch letter) and keep a copy.

Under the RBI rules on limiting customer liability in unauthorised electronic banking transactions, timing matters. Where the fault is neither the customer’s nor the bank’s, a customer who reports within three working days has limited liability. Delays can increase what you may have to bear, so report the same day if you can. The exact outcome depends on your case and your bank’s policy.

Phone aur accounts ko kaise secure kare?

  1. If you installed AnyDesk, TeamViewer, QuickSupport or any APK file for the scammer, turn on airplane mode and uninstall it.
  2. From a different, safe device, change your net banking, email and UPI app passwords.
  3. Log out of other devices in your email and WhatsApp settings.
  4. If your phone suddenly lost signal before the fraud, call your mobile operator: it may be a SIM swap.
  5. Turn on transaction alerts and set lower daily UPI and card limits for now.

Police complaint aur Chakshu report

The cybercrime.gov.in complaint is the main record, but a written complaint at your local police station or cyber cell supports it, especially for larger amounts. Take your complaint number, transaction list and screenshots. Our free cyber fraud complaint draft puts all of it on one page in English or Hindi.

Then report the numbers, SMS and WhatsApp messages used in the fraud on Chakshu at sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc. Chakshu accepts suspected fraud communications from the last 30 days, even when no money was lost, and helps get numbers blocked.

Watch outAfter a fraud, people often get calls from “recovery agents” or “cyber police” offering to return the money for a fee. That is a second scam. Real police do not charge to recover money.

After the first hour: follow up and look after yourself

Once the urgent steps are done, a little organisation helps the case move:

  • Keep one folder or notebook with your 1930 acknowledgement, cybercrime.gov.in complaint number, bank reference numbers and police receipt.
  • Check the status of your complaint on cybercrime.gov.in and reply if the police ask for more details.
  • Watch your bank statement for a few weeks, and dispute any new transaction you do not recognise.
  • Tell family and friends what happened. Scammers sometimes target contacts next, and talking about it reduces the shame many victims feel.

Losing money to fraud is upsetting. It happens to careful, educated people every day, because these schemes are run by organised groups. Reporting quickly is the most useful thing you can do, and you have done it.

Which scam was it? Learn the pattern

Knowing the pattern helps you explain it in the complaint and protect others. The free Digital Suraksha course covers all of them for the whole family.

Frequently asked questions

What is 1930?

1930 is the national cyber crime helpline for reporting online financial fraud in India. Calling quickly lets the complaint reach banks and wallets so they can try to hold the money.

Can I file a cyber fraud complaint online?

Yes. File on cybercrime.gov.in, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Add the transaction IDs, amounts, times and the accounts or UPI IDs that received the money.

How soon should I tell my bank?

Immediately, on the same day if you can. Under RBI rules, where the fault is neither yours nor the bank’s, reporting within three working days limits your liability. Delays can increase it.

Will I get my money back after calling 1930?

There is no guarantee. Recovery depends on how fast the report is made and whether the money can still be found and held. Reporting within the first hour gives the best chance.

Should I report a scam call even if I lost nothing?

Yes. Report it on Chakshu at sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc for calls and messages from the last 30 days. It helps block the numbers before they reach someone else.
