Manglik Dosha: Myths vs Facts, Cancellations and What It Really Means

By IndiaDigital editors5 min read

Manglik dosh kya hota hai?

Manglik dosha, also called Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha, is a traditional rule about the planet Mars (Mangal) and marriage. When Mars falls in certain houses of the birth chart, the chart is labelled Manglik, and families have long preferred to match a Manglik chart with another Manglik chart.

Most North Indian panchangs check six houses: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12, counted from the lagna and also from the Moon. Some South Indian traditions also count from Venus, and some leave out the 2nd house. That is one reason two astrologers can disagree about the same chart.

Myths vs facts about Manglik dosha

Being Manglik is rare and unluckyMars is in one of 6 of the 12 houses from any one reference point, so about half of all charts are Manglik by lagna alone, and more when the Moon is counted too.
A Manglik must not marry a non-ManglikClassical rules allow balance from the partner’s chart (Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in key houses) and list many cancellations.
Manglik dosha harms the spouse’s healthThere is no scientific evidence that a planet’s position at birth affects anyone’s health or lifespan.
Every Manglik needs a costly pujaRemedies are a matter of personal faith. No ritual is required by law or by the texts as a condition of marriage, and you never need to pay under pressure.
Manglik dosha ends at 28This is a popular saying, not a rule found consistently in classical texts. Different families follow different customs.

Manglik dosha cancellation: when is it not counted?

Our Manglik checker reports these commonly quoted cancellations (parihara) whenever the basic condition is met:

  • Mars in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) or its exaltation sign (Makara).
  • Sign and house exceptions often printed in panchangs: Mars in the 2nd in Mithuna or Kanya, in the 4th in Mesha or Vrishchika, in the 7th in Karka or Makara, in the 8th in Dhanu or Meena, in the 12th in Vrishabha or Tula.
  • Mars together with Jupiter, or aspected by Jupiter (Jupiter’s 5th, 7th or 9th aspect).
  • Mars together with the Moon in the same sign.

The tool also gives a level: “strong” when Mars is in a Manglik house from both the lagna and the Moon, and “mild” when it is only one of them. Many families treat a mild Manglik chart with a cancellation as not Manglik at all.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Yes, and millions do. Within the tradition itself, the partner’s chart can balance the Manglik factor, a rule called samya. Our kundli milan looks for Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the partner’s chart (from the lagna, or from the Moon when the birth time is unknown) and lists any it finds.

TipIf your family follows the Manglik rule, use the full picture: the level, cancellations, partner balance and the 36 gun match. Reading only the word “Manglik” leads to needless worry.

How to check if you are Manglik, step by step

  1. Note your date, exact time and place of birth. Without the time, only the Moon-based check is possible.
  2. Open the Manglik dosha check and enter the details.
  3. Read which house Mars occupies from the lagna and from the Moon.
  4. See the level (none, mild or strong) and every cancellation that applies.
  5. If you are matching, run kundli milan with both charts to see partner balance.

Why do different astrologers give different Manglik results?

Because the rule itself varies. Some count from lagna only, some from lagna, Moon and Venus. Some include the 2nd house, some do not. Some accept a long list of exceptions, others very few. The ayanamsa and the birth time also matter when Mars sits near the edge of a sign. Our tool states its method: whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, six houses, from both lagna and Moon.

Watch outIf someone uses the word Manglik to frighten you or to sell an expensive remedy, take a pause. A calm second opinion, and your own judgement about the person you want to marry, matter far more.

How to talk about Manglik dosha with family

For many families the Manglik question comes up early in a rishta conversation, sometimes before the two people have even met. A few practical habits keep it calm:

  • Share the full result, not one word. A printout that shows the house of Mars, the level and the cancellations answers most questions at once.
  • Check both charts with the same method. Comparing a strict reading of one chart with a lenient reading of the other creates false alarms.
  • Remember how common it is. If roughly half of all charts are Manglik by one reference point, a Manglik label tells you very little about a person.
  • Keep the person at the centre. Values, health, education, work and how two people treat each other are what families can actually see and discuss.

If elders still feel uneasy, many families find it reassuring to look at the 36 gun match and the partner balance together. Very often the classical rules themselves say the dosha does not apply.

Frequently asked questions

How common is Manglik dosha?

Very common. Mars falls in one of six of the twelve houses from any reference point, so roughly half of all people are Manglik by the lagna alone, and more when the Moon is also counted.

Does Manglik dosha really cause problems in marriage?

It is a traditional belief. There is no scientific evidence that the position of Mars at birth affects marriage, health or lifespan. Families who follow it also follow its cancellations.

What is mild or anshik Manglik?

It usually means Mars is in a Manglik house from only one reference point, for example the Moon but not the lagna. Many families give it little weight, especially when a cancellation also applies.

Can I check Manglik dosha without birth time?

Partly. Without the time, the lagna is unknown, so only the Moon-based check is possible. Our tool says clearly when the result is Moon-only.

Is a remedy compulsory for a Manglik person?

No. Remedies such as prayers or rituals are personal choices of faith. Nobody can require them, and you should never feel pressured to pay for one.
