Kundli Milan 36 Gun Explained: What Score Is Good for Marriage?
What is the 36 gun milan?
Ashtakoot guna milan is the North Indian method of matching two horoscopes for marriage. It compares the bride’s and groom’s Moon sign and birth nakshatra on eight factors called kootas. Each koota carries a fixed maximum, and together they add up to 36 gun (points).
Because it uses only the Moon, guna milan works even when one birth time is approximate, as long as the Moon’s nakshatra is not changing that day. Our kundli milan calculator warns you if the Moon changed nakshatra on a birth date, because then the exact time matters.

| Koota | Maximum gun | What it compares (traditional view) |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Temperament and spiritual outlook, from the Moon sign |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence |
| Tara | 3 | Birth star harmony, read as wellbeing |
| Yoni | 4 | Instinctive nature and physical compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between the two Moon sign lords, read as mental match |
| Gana | 6 | Nature: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Distance between the two Moon signs, read as family welfare |
| Nadi | 8 | Aadi, Madhya or Antya nadi, traditionally linked with health and progeny |
| Total | 36 |
Notice that the heaviest weights sit on the last three: Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi carry 21 of the 36 points. That is why a couple can look average on total and still have a good match on the factors families care about most, or the other way round.
Kundli milan mein kitne gun milne chahiye?
These are the bands used in most panchang software, and in our calculator:
| Score | Usual reading |
|---|---|
| 32 to 36 | Excellent match |
| 25 to 31 | Good match |
| 18 to 24 | Average, acceptable |
| Below 18 | Traditionally not recommended without further checks |
A score of exactly 18 is the classical minimum and is commonly accepted. A score of 36 out of 36 is very rare and is not a promise of a happy marriage, just as 17 is not a promise of trouble. The total is one input that families use alongside the full charts, the Manglik check and, above all, the two people themselves.
Nadi dosh, Bhakoot dosh and Gana dosh: are they cancelled?
Nadi dosha is present when both partners share the same nadi, which gives 0 out of 8. Bhakoot dosha is present when the Moon signs sit 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 from each other, giving 0 out of 7. Gana dosha is read when Gana scores 0 or 1 out of 6.
Classical texts list exceptions (parihara) under which these doshas are treated as cancelled. Our calculator checks the ones most panchangs print and tells you which apply. It never changes the score itself:
- Nadi: both have the same rashi but different nakshatras; the same nakshatra but different rashis; the same nakshatra but different padas; or the two Moon signs share the same lord.
- Bhakoot: the two Moon sign lords are the same or are friends; the Navamsa Moon sign lords are friends; or Nadi and Tara both score full.
- Gana: the Moon sign lords are friendly; the Navamsa lords are friendly; or the groom’s nakshatra is more than 14 stars from the bride’s.
TipDifferent traditions accept different exceptions. If your family pandit follows a stricter or looser list, that is normal. The calculator shows exactly which rule matched so you can discuss it.
How to do kundli milan online, step by step
- Collect both birth dates, times (as exact as possible) and places.

Is 18 gun milan good or bad?
By the traditional rule, 18 is the pass mark and is considered acceptable, especially when Nadi and Bhakoot have no uncancelled dosha. Many happy marriages have scores in the low 20s. Many couples also marry without matching at all. Guna milan is a cultural custom with a long history, but it is not evidence about compatibility, health or children. Treat it as one conversation starter, not a verdict.
Why does the same couple get different scores on different sites?
Scores can differ by a point or two between calculators even with identical birth details. The common reasons are the Vashya, Yoni and Gana grids, which vary slightly between commentaries, and the ayanamsa, which can move the Moon into the next nakshatra for someone born near a boundary. A wrong time zone or a birth place picked in the wrong state can also shift the Moon. Our calculator uses Lahiri ayanamsa and the grids most panchang software prints, and it lists every koota separately, so you can see exactly where two reports disagree instead of comparing only the totals.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good kundli milan score?
25 or more out of 36 is usually called good and 32 or more excellent. 18 to 24 is average and widely accepted. Below 18 is traditionally not recommended unless the doshas are cancelled and both families are comfortable.
Can kundli milan be done without birth time?
Mostly yes. Guna milan uses the Moon’s sign and nakshatra, which rarely change within a day. If the Moon changed nakshatra on a birth date, the exact time matters, and our calculator warns you.
Is Nadi dosh always serious?
In tradition it carries the most weight, but classical texts list cancellations, for example same rashi with different nakshatras or the same nakshatra in different padas. Check which exceptions apply before worrying.
Is kundli milan done by name accurate?
Name-based matching uses the first syllable of a name to guess a nakshatra. It is a rough custom used when birth details are unknown, and it can easily differ from the real birth nakshatra.
Are our birth details stored when we match kundlis here?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Neither partner’s birth details are uploaded or saved on our servers.

Jyotish is a traditional belief system, not a science that can predict events. We explain how the classical rules work and calculate them carefully, but nothing here should cause fear or replace advice from a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser. Big decisions such as marriage deserve the full picture, not a single chart factor.
