Bank account closure letter, filled in for you

To close a bank account you give the branch a signed request, return unused cheque leaves and the debit card, and say how the remaining balance should be paid. Fill in the form, choose transfer, demand draft or cash, and download the letter as Word or PDF.

Most banks also have their own closure form, so ask the branch whether to attach this letter to it.

What is a bank account closure letter?

This is a formal request to the Branch Manager to close your savings or current account. It states the reason, how to pay the closing balance (to another account with IFSC, by demand draft, or in cash if it is small), lists the cheque leaves and card you are returning, asks the bank to stop standing instructions and online access, and asks for a written closure confirmation.

When do you need a bank account closure letter?

  • You have moved city and no longer need the account at the old branch.
  • You have too many accounts and want to keep fewer.
  • A salary account is no longer in use after a job change.
  • You want to avoid minimum balance charges on an unused account.

Documents needed for a bank account closure letter

  • Passbook, unused cheque leaves and the debit card.
  • A copy of your ID proof (and of the joint holder, if any).
  • Details of the account the balance should go to, with IFSC, if you want a transfer.

How to make a bank account closure letter: stamp paper, signing, submitting

  1. Move or stop any EMIs, SIPs, subscriptions and salary credits linked to the account first.
  2. Fill in the bank, account and reason for closing.
  3. Choose how the closing balance should be paid and fill in those details.
  4. Download, print and sign. All joint holders should sign.
  5. Submit the letter with the passbook, cheque leaves and card at the branch, and ask for a closure confirmation.

Common mistakes

  • Closing the account while an EMI, SIP or insurance auto-debit still uses it.
  • Not returning unused cheque leaves. Keep the cheque numbers in the letter.
  • Forgetting a joint holder’s signature.
  • Leaving without a written confirmation of closure.

Questions people ask

Is there a charge for closing an account?

Some banks charge for closing an account within a certain period of opening it. Charges differ by bank, so check your bank’s schedule of charges; the letter says the balance is paid after any applicable charges.

Can I close an account at any branch?

Usually you close it at the home branch where the account is held. Some banks accept requests at other branches or online; ask your bank.

Does the letter show my full account number?

No. Both account numbers are masked to the last four digits by default. If your branch wants the full numbers, switch masking off before you download.

Can I write the letter in Hindi?

Yes. Switch the document language to Hindi and the whole letter is written in Hindi.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Everything is made on your device, in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, and the draft stays only on this device until you clear it.
