How this panchang is worked out
- Sun and Moon positions come from Astronomy Engine (MIT licence), an open-source library accurate to a small fraction of a degree for these dates. Sidereal longitudes use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa.
- Tithi is the Moon’s lead over the Sun in 12-degree steps; nakshatra is the Moon’s sidereal longitude in 13°20′ parts; yoga adds the Sun and Moon; karana is half a tithi. End times are found to the second and shown to the minute.
- Sunrise and sunset use the upper edge of the Sun with standard refraction. Moonrise and moonset use the centre of the Moon on the horizon, as Drik Panchang does.
- Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika are eighths of the daytime by weekday; Abhijit is the eighth of 15 daytime muhurtas; Brahma muhurat is the 14th of 15 night muhurtas before sunrise; choghadiya splits day and night into eight parts each.
- We tested 3 dates in 3 cities against Drik Panchang: sunrise and sunset matched to the minute and every tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana end time was within 2 minutes.
Panchang: common questions
What is the tithi today?
Open this page and the card at the top shows today’s tithi for your city with the exact time it ends, then the next tithi. A tithi is one of 30 lunar days: the time the Moon takes to move 12 degrees ahead of the Sun. Because that speed varies, a tithi lasts between about 19 and 26 hours and can start at any time of day.
What is Rahu kaal and how is it calculated?
Rahu kaal is a period of about 90 minutes each day that many families avoid for starting new work. The time from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts, and the weekday decides which part is Rahu kaal (for example the eighth part on Sunday and the second on Monday). Because it depends on your local sunrise and sunset, it changes with your city and the season.
Why does the panchang differ by city?
Sunrise, sunset and moonrise depend on where you are, so Rahu kaal, choghadiya and the tithi prevailing at sunrise can differ between cities. The end times of tithi and nakshatra are the same moment everywhere in India; only the sunrise they are compared with changes.
Which ayanamsa does this panchang use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the ayanamsa adopted by the Indian Calendar Reform Committee and used by most printed panchangs. Positions of the Sun and Moon come from the open-source Astronomy Engine library, and we check our times against a published panchang for several cities and dates.
What is the difference between amanta and purnimanta months?
In the amanta system (used in Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India) a lunar month ends on Amavasya. In the purnimanta system (used in most of North India) it ends on Purnima. Shukla paksha has the same month name in both; in Krishna paksha the purnimanta month is one ahead. We show both.
What is choghadiya?
Choghadiya divides the day and the night into eight parts each. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are considered good, Char is neutral and good for travel, and Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided for new beginnings. It is widely used in Gujarat and Rajasthan to pick a quick good time.
Is my location sent anywhere?
No. If you tap Use my location, your phone gives the coordinates to this page, the sunrise is worked out on your phone, and nothing is uploaded or stored on a server. You can also just pick your city from the list.
