Marathi lagna patrika wording (लग्नपत्रिका) with samples
A Marathi lagna patrika follows a pattern that families from Pune to Nagpur recognise at a glance: an invocation to Ganpati and the kuldevata, a warm सप्रेम नमस्कार, the couple’s names with their honorifics, the shubh muhurta and a list of the family members who invite you. This guide explains each part in plain English and then gives complete sample wordings in Marathi that you can adapt for a printed card or an invite website.

The parts of a Marathi lagna patrika
Invocation: the first line is almost always “॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥”. Many families add their kuldevata or kuldevi on the next line in the form “॥ श्री कुलस्वामिनी प्रसन्न ॥” or “॥ श्री खंडेराय प्रसन्न ॥”, using the name of their own family deity.
Greeting: the body opens with “सप्रेम नमस्कार” (with loving greetings). Older cards and letters use the abbreviation “स.न.वि.वि.”, सप्रेम नमस्कार, विनंती विशेष, which reads as “with loving greetings, a special request”. Either is correct; सप्रेम नमस्कार is easier for younger readers.
The couple: the groom is written as चि. (चिरंजीव) and the bride as चि. सौ. कां. (चिरंजीव सौभाग्यकांक्षिणी). Each name is followed by the parents’ names and the family’s town, for example “कै. … यांचा नातू” when a grandparent is to be remembered.
Muhurta and programme: the wedding is fixed at a precise शुभमुहूर्त, often to the minute (“सकाळी ११ वाजून ४५ मिनिटांनी”). Families list the साखरपुडा, हळद, सीमांत पूजन, लग्न and स्वागत समारंभ with day, date and time, and many add the Shaka date as well.
Closing: the request “आपण सहकुटुंब सहपरिवार उपस्थित राहून वधू-वरांस शुभाशीर्वाद द्यावेत, ही नम्र विनंती” is followed by “आपले नम्र” and the names of the inviting relatives. Some cards add “कृपया आहेर आणू नये” if the family does not want gifts.
What guests do at the muhurta
At a Marathi wedding the bride and groom stand facing each other behind an अंतरपाट (a cloth held between them) while the priest and relatives sing मंगलाष्टके. Guests are handed अक्षता, rice grains coloured with kumkum, and shower them on the couple at each “शुभमंगल सावधान”. When the अंतरपाट is lowered the couple exchange garlands.
That is why the muhurta time matters so much: guests who arrive late miss the moment. On an invite website, put the muhurta as the main function so the countdown ends exactly when the मंगलाष्टके begin.
Complete wedding samples
The first sample is a classic card from the bride’s family; the second is a shorter modern version.
Sakharpuda (engagement) wording
The साखरपुडा card is shorter and is often sent only to close relatives and friends.
Vastushanti (griha pravesh) wording
For a new home the card is called a वास्तुशांती or गृहप्रवेश निमंत्रण. Mention the puja time and the meal (भोजन / महाप्रसाद).
