The upanayanam, called janeu in the North, munji in Maharashtra and poonal in Tamil Nadu, is the sacred thread ceremony where a boy receives the yajnopavita and is taught the Gayatri mantra by his father or guru. The rituals often run over two days, with the udakashanti or nandi on the first day, the main ceremony at dawn, the symbolic bhiksha where the mother gives the first alms, and a feast for relatives.
