Valaikappu is the Tamil bangle ceremony for a mother-to-be, usually in the seventh or ninth month. Married women of both families take turns slipping glass bangles onto her wrists, apply sandal paste and kumkum, and sing for her and the baby. The jingle of bangles is believed to comfort the child. Jasmine in the hair, a silk saree, and a lunch of variety rice and sweets are part of the day, and many families combine it with seemantham.
The guest list is mostly women, aunts, cousins, neighbours and friends, and many of them will want to bring a set of bangles. This free invite page gives them the time, venue and a Google Maps button, and lets them reply with how many are coming so the lunch is planned properly. The default text is in Tamil and English, so paatti can read it in her own language.
