Udyam registration, free and online

Udyam is the government’s free MSME registration. It takes Aadhaar and PAN, needs no documents to upload, and opens doors to cheaper loans and faster payments. Check your class first.

Smallup to ₹25 crore / ₹100 crore
Mediumup to ₹125 crore / ₹500 crore

Micro enterprise. Both investment and turnover must be within the limit; the higher of the two decides the class.

How to register, step by step

  1. Open the official portal

Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose “For new entrepreneurs who are not registered yet as MSME”. It is free. Ignore look-alike sites that ask for money.

  2. Verify Aadhaar

Enter the Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory and the OTP sent to the linked mobile.

  3. Verify PAN

PAN of the business (or the proprietor’s PAN) is checked online. GSTIN is linked if you have one.

  4. Fill business details

Name, type of organisation, address, bank account, main activity (NIC code), number of employees, investment and turnover. No documents are uploaded.

  5. Submit and download the certificate

You get a permanent Udyam Registration Number at once and an e-certificate with a QR code. Keep it with your shop papers.

Beware of fake sites: Udyam registration and updates are free on the government portal. Sites with similar names that charge ₹1,000 or more are private agents, not the Ministry of MSME.

What you get

Paid within 45 days

A buyer must pay a micro or small supplier within 45 days (15 without a written agreement). Delayed payment draws compound interest, and you can file on MSME Samadhaan. Large buyers also lose the income tax deduction for such dues until they pay (section 43B(h)).

Loans without collateral

Banks lend to MSMEs under priority sector rules, and the CGTMSE scheme covers collateral-free loans.

Government buying

Preference in government tenders and on GeM, often with no earnest money deposit.

Schemes and subsidies

Most central and state MSME schemes ask for the Udyam number.

After registering

How it works

  • Registration is only on udyamregistration.gov.in and costs nothing. Sites that charge a fee or look similar are not the government.
  • The class uses both investment in plant, machinery or equipment and turnover, under the limits in force from 1 April 2025.
  • Investment and turnover are picked up from your income tax and GST records once registered, and the class updates each year.
  • Very small units without GST or PAN can use the Udyam Assist Platform through a bank, NBFC or SIDBI facilitator.

Questions people ask

Is Udyam registration mandatory?

It is voluntary, but you need it for most MSME benefits: priority sector loans, CGTMSE collateral-free cover, government tender preferences, and the 45-day payment protection.

Do I need GST to register?

PAN is needed. GSTIN is needed if your business is required to have GST registration. If you do not need GST, you can register with PAN alone.
