Moving to a new city every address to update, in order
A move means a long list of address changes. Here is the order that works, with official fees and the portals to use, so your papers catch up with you.
Change the address in the Aadhaar App or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, using a proof of address in your name. UIDAI accepts a registered or unregistered rent agreement, a utility bill not older than three months and several other documents. Once Aadhaar is updated, use it as proof for every other change below.
On the Voters’ Service Portal, fill Form 8 and choose shifting of residence, with proof of your new address. Your name moves to the roll of the new constituency and a fresh EPIC is sent by speed post. Do not fill Form 6 again: being on two rolls is an offence.
Keep taking ration with One Nation One Ration Card
When: From the first month
Time: 10 minutes at the shop
Official fee: No extra charge for portabilitysource
If it applies: Only if you have an NFSA ration card
With an NFSA ration card you can take your ration at any fair price shop in India after Aadhaar authentication, so you do not need a new card at once. Check your entitlement and nearby shops in the Mera Ration app. If your whole family has moved for good, ask the new state’s food department how to transfer the card.
If it applies: Only if you moved to another state with a vehicle and will stay more than 12 months
Under section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, a vehicle can stay in another state for up to 12 months; after that it must be registered with the new state. Apply for an NOC from your old RTO on Vahan, then apply for a new registration mark at the new RTO and pay that state’s road tax as it asks. Government staff and employees of companies with offices in four or more states or UTs can choose BH series registration for a new vehicle, with tax paid every two years.
Time: 20 minutes online, card by post in a few weeks
Official fee: ₹200 (central fee for change of address)source
If it applies: Only if you have a driving licence
Apply for change of address on Sarathi, choosing the RTO of your new area, and upload your new address proof. The central fee is ₹200; your state may add smart card or service charges. Keep the acknowledgement until the updated licence reaches you.
Many banks let you change the address in net banking or the app with Aadhaar; otherwise give a signed letter with proof at any branch. Keep your mobile, email and bank KYC current on the EPFO member portal, and send your new address to your insurers. You do not have to move your bank account to a branch in the new city.
If it applies: Only if you have a piped or cylinder LPG connection
Tell your current gas distributor you are moving, and ask how to transfer the connection and what papers to carry to the new distributor. If you have to surrender the cylinder and regulator, collect the termination or transfer papers and the deposit details before you leave. For a PMUY (Ujjwala) connection, give a request letter with ID proof to your distributor.
If it applies: Only if the home has no connection in your or the owner’s name
If you need a new electricity connection, apply to the local distribution company with ID and proof of ownership or occupancy, such as a rent agreement. Under the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, the maximum time after a complete application is 3 days in metro areas, 7 days in other municipal areas and 15 days in rural areas (30 days in hilly rural areas). For water, apply at the municipal body.
If it applies: Only if you have school-going children
Ask the old school for the transfer certificate, report cards and any board registration papers before you leave. Check that your child has an APAAR ID, the student record ID that the new school can use to look up academic records. Admission rules and dates differ by school and board, so start early.
If you hire domestic help or a driver in the new city, you can ask the police to verify them. Many state police portals and the Home Ministry’s Digital Police portal take these requests online. Keep a copy of their ID and the acknowledgement.
Aadhaar. Once your Aadhaar shows the new address, most other offices accept it as proof. UIDAI also accepts a rent agreement as proof of address, so you can start with that.
