Example 1 · level 1

What is the nature of the roots of 4x² + x + 4 = 0?

  1. Two distinct real roots
  2. Cannot be decided
  3. No real roots
  4. Two equal real roots
Show solution
  1. D = 1 − 64 = −63.
  2. D < 0, so: no real roots.

Answer: No real roots

Example 2 · level 2

Find the positive value of k for which 16x² + kx + 9 = 0 has two equal roots.

Show solution
  1. D = k² − 4 × 16 × 9 = 0
  2. k² = 576
  3. k = 24 (taking the positive value).

Answer: 24

Example 3 · level 3

Find the positive value of k for which 48x² + kx + 27 = 0 has two equal roots.

Show solution
  1. D = k² − 4 × 48 × 27 = 0
  2. k² = 5184
  3. k = 72 (taking the positive value).

Answer: 72
