Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

Evaluate lim (x → −2) (x³ + 2x² + 2x + 4).

Show solution
  1. Substituting x = −2 gives 0.

Answer: 0

Example 2 · level 2

Evaluate lim (x → 5) (x² − 8x + 15)/(x − 5).

Show solution
  1. After cancelling, the limit is lim (x → 5) (x − 3).
  2. = 5 − 3 = 2.

Answer: 2

Example 3 · level 3

Evaluate lim (x → 3) (x² − 9)/(x⁴ − 81).

Show solution
  1. Limit = (2 × 3)/(4 × 27) = 6/108 = 1/18.

Answer: 1/18
