CLASS 11 MATHS · STRAIGHT LINES

Straight lines: slope, intercepts and distance

Slope = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁). For ax + by + c = 0, slope = −a/b and the distance of (x₁, y₁) from the line is |ax₁ + by₁ + c|/√(a² + b²).

Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

Find the slope of the line through (−4, 3) and (1, 5).

Show solution
  1. m = 2/5.

Answer: 2/5

Example 2 · level 2

For the line −5x + 5y + 5 = 0, find the slope.

Show solution
  1. Slope = 1.

Answer: 1

Example 3 · level 3

Find the perpendicular distance of the point (−1, −5) from the line 3x + 4y + 43 = 0.

Show solution
  1. ax₁ + by₁ + c = 3 × (−1) + 4 × (−5) + 43 = 20.
  2. d = |20| / 5 = 4.
