Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

f(x) = (3x − 5)². Find f′(0).

Show solution
  1. f′(x) = 2(3x − 5) × 3.
  2. f′(0) = 2 × (−5) × 3 = −30.

Answer: -30

Example 2 · level 2

f(x) = (−x² + 4)³. Find f′(−2).

Show solution
  1. f′(x) = 3(−x² + 4)² × −2x.
  2. f′(−2) = 3 × (0)² × −2 × (−2) = 0.

Answer: 0

Example 3 · level 3

f(x) = √(4x). Find f′(4).

Show solution
  1. f′(x) = 4/(2√(4x)).
  2. f′(4) = 4/(2 × 4) = 1/2.

Answer: 1/2
