Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

12 marbles are packed 2 in each box. How many boxes are completely filled?

Show solution
  1. 12 ÷ 2: 2 × 6 = 12.
  2. 12 − 12 = 0, so the quotient is 6 and the remainder is 0.

Answer: 6

Example 2 · level 2

53 pencils are packed 8 in each box. How many pencils are left over?

Show solution
  1. 53 ÷ 8: 8 × 6 = 48.
  2. 53 − 48 = 5, so the quotient is 6 and the remainder is 5.

Answer: 5

Example 3 · level 3

20 laddoos are packed 8 in each box. How many boxes are completely filled?

Show solution
  1. 20 ÷ 8: 8 × 2 = 16.
  2. 20 − 16 = 4, so the quotient is 2 and the remainder is 4.
