Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

Find the remainder when x² + 5x − 5 is divided by (x + 1).

Show solution
  1. x + 1 = 0 gives x = −1.
  2. p(−1) = (−1)² + 5 × (−1) − 5
  3. = −9. So the remainder is −9.

Answer: -9

Example 2 · level 2

Find the remainder when x³ − 2x² + 4x − 4 is divided by (x − 2).

Show solution
  1. x − 2 = 0 gives x = 2.
  2. p(2) = 2³ − 2 × 2² + 4 × 2 − 4
  3. = 4. So the remainder is 4.

Answer: 4

Example 3 · level 3

Find the remainder when 3x³ + 2x² − x − 7 is divided by (x + 4).

Show solution
  1. x + 4 = 0 gives x = −4.
  2. p(−4) = 3 × (−4)³ + 2 × (−4)² − (−4) − 7
  3. = −163. So the remainder is −163.

Answer: -163
