How to Split a PDF and Extract Pages: Single Pages, Ranges and More
How to split a PDF or extract pages
- Open the PDF in a reader and note the page numbers you need (use the reader's page numbers, not the printed ones).
- Open Split PDF on IndiaDigital and add the file.
- Choose a mode: extract selected pages, split every page into its own file, or split by ranges.
- Type the pages or ranges, for example 1-3, 7, 10-12.
- Run the split and download the result (several files arrive together as a ZIP).
- Open each new PDF to confirm it starts and ends on the right page.
Why split a PDF at all?
Long PDFs are convenient to store but awkward to share. You might need to send just the signed page of a contract, submit one chapter of a thesis, give each employee their own payslip from a combined file, or upload a scanned bundle to a portal that only accepts small files. Splitting lets you share exactly what is needed and nothing more, which is better for privacy as well as convenience.
There are a few distinct ways to split, and choosing the right one saves time.
| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Pull out a few specific pages into one new PDF | Split PDF, extract pages |
| Turn every page into its own PDF | Split PDF, each page |
| Cut the document into chapters or sections | Split PDF, ranges |
| Get every part under an email or portal size limit | Split PDF by size |
| Reorder, delete or rotate pages but keep one file | Organize PDF |
Extracting single pages and ranges
Split PDF handles the three most common jobs in one place.
- Extract pages. Enter the pages you want, such as 2, 5, 9-11, and get a single new PDF containing just those pages in that order. Ideal for sending a signature page or a few relevant pages from a long report.
- Each page. Every page becomes its own PDF, downloaded together in a ZIP. Useful for scanned bundles of receipts, certificates or individual payslips.
- Ranges. Define several ranges, such as 1-4, 5-12, 13-20, and each becomes a separate file. Good for splitting a book into chapters or an annual report into sections.
TipPage numbers in the tool are physical positions in the file, starting from 1. If your document has a cover and roman-numeral front matter, page '1' printed at the bottom might be the fifth page in the file. Check the page number shown in your reader's toolbar.

Sometimes you do not care where the breaks fall; you simply need each piece to be small enough. Email providers commonly cap attachments, and government, university and job portals often set much tighter limits per file. Splitting by size cuts the document into consecutive parts that each stay under the size you choose.
- Check the exact limit on the portal or email service, and aim a little below it.
- Open Split PDF by size and set the maximum size per part.
- Download the parts and name them clearly, for example Application_Part1of3.pdf.
- Tell the recipient how many parts to expect.
Before splitting for size, it is worth trying to compress first. A scanned document often shrinks dramatically with Compress PDF, and a single file is easier for everyone than three parts. If you need one file at an exact size, Target-size PDF is designed for that. Our guides on sending a PDF that is too large for email and compressing a PDF to 100 KB cover those routes.
Splitting by bookmarks or chapters
Well-made PDFs, such as reports exported from Word with headings or e-books, often include bookmarks (the outline panel in your reader). Bookmarks are the natural chapter breaks, so they make a good guide for splitting.
The simplest reliable method is to open the bookmarks panel, click each top-level bookmark and note the page it jumps to. Those page numbers become your ranges. For example, if chapters start on pages 1, 9, 23 and 40 in a 52-page file, enter 1-8, 9-22, 23-39 and 40-52 in range mode. This also gives you a chance to check that the bookmarks point where you expect before you cut.
Watch outBookmarks and internal links that point to pages outside a split part will no longer work in that part. If readers rely on cross-references, consider keeping the document whole and sending it compressed instead.
Tidying the pages before or after splitting
Splitting is often one step in a small clean-up. If pages are out of order, sideways or include blank scans, fix them with Organize PDF, which lets you reorder, rotate and delete pages visually and save the result as one file. Then split if you still need separate parts.
If an extracted section contains confidential information, you can lock it before sending. See how to password-protect a PDF for choosing a strong password and sharing it safely.
Organize PDFReorder, select or remove pages from a copy.Open tool →Common questions about quality and privacy
Splitting does not re-render or recompress pages. Each page is copied as it is, so text stays selectable and searchable, and images keep their original quality. Form fields and annotations on the extracted pages usually come across too, though complex interactive forms are worth checking.
Because IndiaDigital processes the file in your browser, the original PDF is not uploaded anywhere. That matters for the kinds of documents people tend to split: bank statements, legal bundles, medical records and HR files. One limitation: if the PDF is password-protected, you will need to unlock it with the current password first, using Remove PDF password, before it can be split.
Frequently asked questions
Does splitting a PDF reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied without re-encoding, so text, images and vector graphics stay exactly as they were in the original.
How do I extract one page from a PDF?
Open Split PDF, choose the extract pages option, type the page number and download the new file. You can list several pages or ranges if you want them combined into one PDF.
Can I split a PDF so each part is under a certain size?
Yes. Use Split PDF by size and set the maximum size per part. Try compressing the file first, as a single smaller file is often easier to send than several parts.
Why are my page numbers off by a few pages?
The tool uses the physical position of each page in the file, starting at 1. Covers and front matter numbered in roman numerals shift the printed numbers, so use the page number shown in your reader's toolbar.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
You need to know the password. Remove it with Remove PDF password, split the file, and then re-encrypt the parts if they still need protection.
