Why the monsoon comes, where it rains most, the four seasons, and winds with local names
The monsoon is a giant sea breeze
Stand on a beach on a hot afternoon and you feel a cool wind from the sea. The sand heats up fast, the air above it rises, and cooler sea air rushes in to fill the gap. The monsoon is the same thing on the scale of a whole subcontinent and a whole season: the hot land of north-west India pulls in moist air from the Indian Ocean for months.
- Summer: low pressure over land, so winds blow from sea to land
- Winter: the flow reverses, from land to sea
Summary
Monsoon means a seasonal reversal of wind direction. In summer, land heats up much faster than the sea, so the air over north-west India becomes hot and light and a low-pressure area forms there, while the air over the Indian Ocean stays cooler, with higher pressure. Wind blows from high pressure to low pressure, so moist air moves from the sea towards the land. The south-east trade winds cross the equator, are turned to their right by the earth’s rotation (the Coriolis force) and arrive as the south-west monsoon, usually reaching the Kerala coast in the first week of June. In winter the pattern reverses and dry winds blow from the land to the sea.
The monsoon arrives in two branches. The Arabian Sea branch strikes the Western Ghats: the windward (sea-facing) slopes get very heavy rain, while the leeward side on the plateau is a dry rain-shadow area. The Bay of Bengal branch sweeps over the north-east and then turns west along the Ganga plains, so rainfall falls steadily from east to west. Mawsynram, in the Khasi hills of Meghalaya, receives the highest average rainfall in the world. The monsoon does not rain every day; dry spells within it are called breaks.
India has four seasons: the cold weather season (December to February), the hot weather season (March to May), the advancing south-west monsoon (June to September) and the retreating monsoon (October and November). Western disturbances from the Mediterranean bring light winter rain to the north-west, which helps the rabi crops. Summer brings the Loo, a hot dry wind over the northern plains, Kalbaisakhi storms in West Bengal and Assam, mango showers in Kerala and coastal Karnataka, and blossom showers for coffee. The Tamil Nadu coast gets much of its rain in the retreating monsoon and winter. Elsewhere in the world, the warm Chinook (Rockies) and Foehn (Alps), the hot Sirocco and Harmattan from the Sahara, and the cold Mistral and Bora have their own names.
