The Pomodoro rhythm

25 minutes of single-task focus, then 5 minutes of real rest: stand up, drink water, look out of the window. After four rounds, take a longer break. During a round, if a thought pops up ("check the cricket score"), jot it on paper and go back.

Summary

The Pomodoro Technique, created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s and named after a tomato-shaped kitchen timer, breaks study into focused blocks: 25 minutes of work, a 5-minute break, and a longer 15–30 minute break after four blocks. A fixed, short block makes starting easier and gives you a clear signal to rest. The lengths are not magic; many students prefer 45–50 minutes of work with a 10-minute break once they are used to it.

Procrastination is usually about avoiding an unpleasant feeling, not laziness. Make starting tiny ("just open the book and do one question for two minutes") and decide in advance with if–then plans, which psychologist Peter Gollwitzer calls implementation intentions: "If it is 7 pm, then I sit at my desk and start Chemistry." A weekly timetable that mixes subjects, includes revision slots, breaks and a weekly mock test turns those plans into a routine.

Phones are the biggest focus thief for most students, whether in a hostel, a PG room or at home. Notifications break concentration, and some studies suggest that even a silent phone on the desk can pull at your attention. Keep it in another room or bag during a session, turn on focus mode or grayscale, set app timers, and check messages only in breaks.
