You usually see a passage on screen (or on paper) and type it into a box while a timer runs. When time is up, the software compares your text with the original and counts errors.

A common pattern is typing a given passage on a computer for a fixed time (often about 10 minutes), in English or Hindi. Rules differ between exams and years: speed targets, how full and half mistakes are counted, whether Backspace is allowed, and which Hindi layout (Inscript or Remington) is accepted.
