Confident, and made up

Ask for a source and a chatbot may produce a perfect-looking one: a title, a year, even a page number, for a report that was never written.

Summary

A hallucination is when an AI states something false as if it were true: a wrong date, a made-up quotation, or a report or court case that does not exist. It happens because the model predicts plausible words; it is not lying on purpose and it does not know it is wrong.

Check important claims in official or original sources: government sites ending in .gov.in or .nic.in, NCERT textbooks for school topics, RBI, ISRO, the GST portal, or the PIB Fact Check unit for viral government claims. When you use a fact in homework or work, cite the original source you checked, not the chatbot.
