National Income and Inflationराष्ट्रीय आय और मुद्रास्फीतिराष्ट्रीय उत्पन्न आणि चलनवाढ questions and answersप्रश्न और उत्तर
National income terms all come from one idea, the total value of what a country produces, measured in slightly different ways. Inflation terms all come from one question: what is happening to prices? Learn the two ideas and the twenty terms are easy.

How national income and inflation works
Imagine a tea stall in Pune. The tea, sugar and milk it buys are inputs; the cups of tea it sells are output. Only the extra value the stall adds is counted, so nothing is counted twice. Add up the value of every final good and service made inside India’s borders in a year and you get GDP.
Now change two things. First, borders versus people: an Indian company earns profit from its factory in Africa, while a foreign company in India sends its profit home. Add the net of such earnings to GDP and you get GNP. Second, wear and tear: the stall’s kettle gets older every year. Subtract this depreciation and gross becomes net, giving NDP and NNP. NNP at factor cost is what economists call national income.
Prices can fool you. If a stall sold 100 cups at Rs 10 last year and 100 cups at Rs 12 this year, sales rose but no extra tea was made. Nominal GDP uses this year’s prices; real GDP uses fixed base-year prices to show true growth. Nominal divided by real, times 100, is the GDP deflator.
Inflation is a sustained rise in prices; deflation is a sustained fall. Disinflation means prices still rise, only more slowly. Stagflation is the worst mix: rising prices with slow growth and joblessness. The base effect explains odd numbers: if onion prices crashed last October, even a normal price this October looks like a big jump. India tracks retail prices with the CPI and wholesale prices with the WPI.

Common mistakes
- Saying GDP counts what Indians earn anywhere. GDP is about production inside the borders; GNP is about the nation’s people.
- Confusing deflation (prices falling) with disinflation (inflation slowing, prices still rising).
- Thinking the RBI targets WPI inflation. Its inflation target is set in terms of CPI.
Frequently asked questions
Why do we use real GDP to measure growth?
Because nominal GDP rises with prices even when nothing extra is produced. Real GDP removes the effect of price changes.
What is core inflation?
Inflation after removing items whose prices swing a lot, mainly food and fuel. It shows the steady underlying trend.
