How to write Mains answers that score

Everything a coaching class teaches about answer writing, in plain words. Read it once, then practise one answer every day in the studio.

1. What the examiner looks for1.

  • Did you answer the question asked?क्या आपने वही उत्तर दिया जो पूछा गया?Every part of it, and in the way the directive word asks. This matters more than how much you know.
  • Is it organised?क्या यह व्यवस्थित है?A short introduction, a body under small headings, and a conclusion that looks ahead. Examiners check hundreds of copies; make yours easy to skim.
  • Does it cover several sides?क्या यह कई पहलुओं को छूता है?Social, economic, political, legal, environmental, ethical, technological: pick the ones that fit.
  • Is it backed up?क्या इसका आधार है?An article of the Constitution, a court case, a committee, a scheme, a report or a real example in each answer.

2. The shape of a good answer2.

Open with a definition, a constitutional provision, a fact or the context of the news. Never repeat the question.
Under each heading, 2 to 4 crisp points of one or two lines. Underline key words. Add a simple flowchart, table or rough map where it saves words.
  • Conclusion: the way forwardनिष्कर्ष: आगे की राहEnd with a balanced view: a committee's recommendation, a constitutional ideal, a Sustainable Development Goal or a practical step. Keep it positive.
  • Time: about 7 and 11 minutesसमय: लगभग 7 और 11 मिनटA GS paper has 20 questions in 3 hours: about 7 minutes for a 10-mark (150-word) answer and 11 minutes for a 15-mark (250-word) one. Attempt every question; a half answer earns more than a blank.

UPSC allows the Mains papers to be written in English or in any language of the Eighth Schedule, and MPSC in Marathi or English; check the exact rules in your notification. Medium does not decide marks: clarity does. Use the standard terms you would see in NCERT books in your language, keep sentences short, and keep English terms in brackets where the official term is better known.UPSC

In the studio, the automatic keyword tick works on English text. If you write in Hindi or Marathi (typed or on paper), tick the terms you covered yourself; the rest of the review works the same.
