How isro space missions works
The story begins in 1975, when Aryabhata, India’s first satellite, went up on a Soviet rocket. Bhaskara-I (1979) tried watching the Earth from space. In 1980, Rohini RS-1 became the first satellite put into orbit by an Indian rocket, the SLV-3. APPLE (1981) tested satellite communication, and IRS-1A (1988) began India’s series of remote-sensing satellites that map crops, forests and water.
Next came the deep-space missions. Chandrayaan-1 (2008) orbited the Moon and helped find water molecules there. The Mars Orbiter Mission, also called Mangalyaan, was launched in 2013 and entered Mars orbit in 2014, making India the first country to reach Mars on its first try. Astrosat (2015) was India’s first space observatory, studying stars in many kinds of light at once.
Then came the big shows of skill. PSLV-C37 in 2017 put 104 satellites into orbit in a single launch. Chandrayaan-2 (2019) put an orbiter around the Moon, but its Vikram lander could not land softly. Chandrayaan-3 learnt from that and landed near the Moon’s south pole on 23 August 2023, a first for any country. The same year, Aditya-L1 set off to study the Sun from a point about 1.5 million km away, called L1.
Recent firsts include XPoSat (launched on 1 January 2024), which studies X-rays from space, and SpaDeX, which showed two satellites docking in space in January 2025. NavIC is India’s own regional navigation system, like a desi GPS. Missions still being built change often, so this topic covers only those that have flown.
