Two families: snow-fed and rain-fed

A Himalayan river is like a house with a water tank on the roof: even in summer, melting snow keeps the taps running. A peninsular river is like a house that only collects rainwater: full in the monsoon, low in the hot months. That one difference explains most exam questions on the two families.

  • Himalayan: perennial, deep gorges, meanders and big deltas
  • Peninsular: seasonal, shorter, over old hard rock

Summary

India’s rivers form two families. The Himalayan rivers (the Indus, the Ganga, the Brahmaputra and their tributaries) are fed by both snow and rain, so they flow all year; they are perennial. They cut deep gorges in the mountains and build huge plains and deltas lower down. The Peninsular rivers depend on rain alone, so many shrink in the dry season. Their courses are shorter and shallower, across old, hard rock.

Three Himalayan rivers rise in Tibet near Lake Mansarovar: the Indus, the Satluj and the Brahmaputra (called the Tsangpo in Tibet). The Ganga begins as the Bhagirathi at the Gangotri glacier near Gaumukh and becomes the Ganga where the Alaknanda joins it at Devprayag. The Yamuna rises at Yamunotri and joins the Ganga at Prayagraj (Allahabad). The Satluj, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum join the Indus in Pakistan. The Brahmaputra enters India in Arunachal Pradesh and, in Assam, holds Majuli, a large inhabited river island.

In the Peninsula the land tilts from west to east, and the Western Ghats are the main water divide. So most rivers rise in the west and flow east into the Bay of Bengal, making deltas: the Mahanadi (from near Sihawa, Chhattisgarh), the Godavari (Trimbakeshwar, Nashik), the Krishna (near Mahabaleshwar) and the Kaveri (Talakaveri, Kodagu). The Godavari is the largest peninsular river and is called the Dakshin Ganga. The Narmada (Amarkantak) and the Tapi (Multai, Betul) flow west into the Arabian Sea through rift valleys and end in estuaries, not deltas.
