Rivers of India and Their Sourcesभारत की नदियाँ और उनके उद्गमभारतातील नद्या आणि त्यांचे उगम questions and answersप्रश्न और उत्तर
Every river has a starting point, called its source or origin. Prelims papers ask where a river rises, which way it flows and which States it passes. If you first fix a simple map in your head, the sources become easy to remember.

How rivers of india and their sources works
Think of India’s rivers as two families. The Himalayan family (Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra and their tributaries) is fed by snow and glaciers, so the rivers flow all year. The Peninsular family (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada and others) is fed by rain, so many of them shrink in summer.
Three big Himalayan rivers start in Tibet, close to Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash: the Indus (near Bokhar Chu), the Satluj (Rakas Tal) and the Brahmaputra (Chemayungdung glacier, where it is called the Tsangpo). The Ganga and Yamuna start inside India, in the glaciers of Uttarakhand: the Ganga at Gangotri near Gaumukh, where it is called the Bhagirathi, and the Yamuna at Yamunotri.
In the Peninsula, the land slopes from west to east, like a tilted plate. So most rivers rise in the Western Ghats and flow east into the Bay of Bengal: the Godavari rises at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik, the Krishna near Mahabaleshwar and the Kaveri at Talakaveri in Kodagu. The Mahanadi rises near Sihawa in Chhattisgarh.
Two rivers break this rule: the Narmada (from Amarkantak) and the Tapi (from Multai in Betul) both rise in Madhya Pradesh and flow west into the Arabian Sea. They run through rift valleys, long cracks in the earth, which is why they flow against the general slope and make estuaries instead of deltas.

Common mistakes
- Saying the Ganga rises at Gangotri town. It rises at the Gangotri glacier near Gaumukh, some distance upstream of the town.
- Putting the source of the Godavari or Krishna in Karnataka. Both rise in Maharashtra; the Kaveri is the one from Karnataka.
- Thinking all peninsular rivers flow east. The Narmada and Tapi flow west, and so do the short rivers of the Western Ghats.

Why do the Narmada and Tapi make estuaries and not deltas?
They flow through narrow rift valleys over hard rock and carry little fine silt, and what they bring is swept away by tides at the mouth, so it does not pile up into a delta.
