A class of about 300 writes a rulebook
Imagine a very large class that meets for almost three years to write the rules for a whole country. That was the Constituent Assembly. Dr Rajendra Prasad chaired the class, and Dr B. R. Ambedkar led the small team, the Drafting Committee, that wrote the text and defended it in the debates.

Summary
The Constitution of India was written by the Constituent Assembly, a body of elected representatives that first met on 9 December 1946. After Partition it had about 300 members. Dr Rajendra Prasad was its President, and Dr B. R. Ambedkar chaired the Drafting Committee that prepared the text. The Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949 (now observed as Constitution Day), and it came into force on 26 January 1950, which we celebrate as Republic Day.
The makers studied many constitutions and chose ideas that suited India. From the United Kingdom came the parliamentary system, the rule of law and single citizenship; from the United States, Fundamental Rights and judicial review; from Ireland, the Directive Principles; from Canada, a federation with a strong Centre; from Australia, the Concurrent List; and from the USSR, the Fundamental Duties. These were adapted, not copied, and much is original to India.
The Preamble is the opening statement of the Constitution. It begins "We, the people of India", which shows that the authority of the Constitution comes from the people. It declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic and promises justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. The words socialist, secular and integrity were added by the 42nd Amendment in 1976, and the Supreme Court has held that the Preamble is a part of the Constitution.
