Instead of reading the answer, cover it and ask: "What are the three types of rocks?" "What does Article 21 protect?" Struggle for a moment, answer, then check. That small struggle is where learning happens.
Summary
Active recall means closing the book and trying to bring an answer back from memory: answering questions, explaining a topic aloud, solving problems without looking at the solution. Psychologists call the benefit the testing effect. In a well-known 2006 study, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke found that students who practised recalling a passage remembered more of it a week later than students who spent the same time re-reading it, even though re-reading did slightly better on a test given a few minutes later.
Two easy ways to practise recall: blurting (write everything you remember about a topic on a blank page, then check the book and fill the gaps in a different colour) and the Feynman technique (explain the topic in simple words as if teaching a younger student; where you get stuck or use jargon, go back and relearn). Turning your notes into questions, and answering past papers before reading solutions, works the same way.
Recall feels harder than re-reading, and getting things wrong feels bad. That struggle is part of how it works: researchers call it a "desirable difficulty". Always check your answers afterwards, so mistakes get corrected instead of remembered.
