How memory works & the forgetting curve
Why you forget what you read last week, and what stops itपिछले हफ़्ते पढ़ा हुआ क्यों भूल जाते हैं, और इसे कैसे रोकें
In, kept, and back out
Everything you study travels a path: you notice it, you hold it briefly in working memory, and some of it is stored in long-term memory. In the exam, you must pull it back out. Most study habits work on the "in" step; marks depend on the "out" step.
- Working memory is small: a few items at a time
- Long-term memory is huge, but finding things in it takes practice
Summary
Learning has two halves: getting information into memory (encoding) and getting it back out when you need it (retrieval). In 1885 the German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus tested his own memory for lists of nonsense syllables and found that forgetting is fast at first and then slows down. This shape, steep in the first day or two and flatter after, is called the forgetting curve, and later research has found the same pattern again and again.
Re-reading and highlighting feel productive because the page looks familiar, but familiarity is not the same as being able to recall an answer in the exam hall. What flattens the curve is reviewing at the right moments, especially by trying to recall, after some forgetting has started. Each well-timed review makes the memory last longer, so the next review can come after a bigger gap.
The chart in this module is a simplified teaching model, not a prediction for any one person. Real forgetting depends on how meaningful the material is, how well you understood it, sleep, stress and much more. The lesson that holds up is the shape: without review most details fade within days; with spaced, effortful review they can last for months.
