PRACTICAL GUIDE

Calculate negative marking from the supplied rule

Use correct answers multiplied by positive marks minus wrong answers multiplied by the stated penalty. Unanswered questions remain separate.

Take it step by step

  1. Enter total, correct and wrong question counts. They must be non-negative whole numbers and correct plus wrong cannot exceed total.
  2. Enter the positive marks and penalty as non-negative amounts. If the penalty is one-third of two marks, use the corresponding supplied fraction value and understand decimal precision.
  3. Calculate and read the formula, unanswered count and maximum. Use separate calculations when sections have different marking rules.
  4. Keep normalization, cutoffs and selection predictions separate. Raw arithmetic does not establish a rank or a qualifying result.
A CONCRETE EXAMPLE

A situation to try.

For 100 questions, 60 correct, 20 wrong, two marks per correct answer and a 0.5 penalty, the supplied raw score is 60×2−20×0.5=110. Twenty questions are unanswered.

Use the tool’s synthetic example first where available. The example here explains a decision; it is not a reported benchmark result.

Before you call it done.

  • Counts reconcile with total.
  • Penalty is entered as a positive amount.
  • Section-specific rules are not mixed.

Know the limits.

JavaScript decimal arithmetic has finite precision. The displayed raw calculation does not implement examination-specific rounding, normalization or qualifying conditions.

This tool’s current boundary: No normalization, cutoff or selection prediction. Different marking sections must be calculated separately.
