Governors-General and Viceroys of British Indiaब्रिटिश भारत के गवर्नर-जनरल और वायसरायब्रिटिश भारताचे गव्हर्नर-जनरल आणि व्हाइसरॉय questions and answersप्रश्न और उत्तर
For almost 175 years, a Governor-General and later a Viceroy ran British India. Each one is remembered for a big policy or event, and prelims papers pair them up. Instead of memorising a list, follow the story: how the British took land, how they ruled after 1857, and how they finally left.

How governors-general and viceroys of british india works
The East India Company came to trade, but by the 1770s it was ruling Bengal. The British Parliament wanted control, so the Regulating Act of 1773 made Warren Hastings the first Governor-General of Bengal. Lord Cornwallis then fixed land revenue for ever through the Permanent Settlement of 1793, so that the Company could count on a steady income from zamindars.
The next Governors-General grew the empire without always fighting. Wellesley’s Subsidiary Alliance made Indian rulers keep British troops in their State and pay for them, which slowly took away their independence, like a guest who moves in and takes over the house. Dalhousie’s Doctrine of Lapse took over States whose ruler died without a natural son, such as Satara and Jhansi. Dalhousie also opened the first railway line in 1853, from Bombay to Thane.
Anger at such policies led to the Revolt of 1857 under Lord Canning. After it, the Crown took over from the Company, and Canning became the first Viceroy. Later Viceroys swung between control and reform: Lytton gagged Indian-language newspapers in 1878, Ripon gave local self-government in 1882, and Curzon partitioned Bengal in 1905 to weaken the national movement there.
In the 20th century the Viceroys faced Gandhi. The Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms came in 1919, Irwin signed a pact with Gandhi in 1931, Linlithgow made the August Offer in 1940, Wavell called the Simla Conference in 1945, and Mountbatten’s 3 June Plan of 1947 divided British India into India and Pakistan.20वीं शताब्दी में वायसरायों का सामना गांधीजी से हुआ।
