How landmark constitutional amendments works
An amendment is like a software update to the Constitution. Article 368 sets the rules: most amendments need a special majority in both Houses of Parliament, and those touching federal matters also need approval from half the State legislatures.
There is one thing Parliament cannot update: the basic structure. In the Kesavananda Bharati case (1973), the Supreme Court said features like democracy, secularism, federalism and judicial review cannot be destroyed, even by an amendment.
The 1970s amendments came from the Emergency period. The 42nd (1976) added the words socialist, secular and integrity to the Preamble and created the Fundamental Duties. The 44th (1978) undid some of its excesses and moved the right to property out of the Fundamental Rights.1970 के दशक के संशोधन आपातकाल के दौर से जुड़े हैं।
Later amendments brought power closer to people and changed the economy: the 61st (1989) let 18-year-olds vote, the 73rd and 74th (1992) gave constitutional status to panchayats and municipalities, the 86th (2002) made education a Fundamental Right, the 101st (2016) brought in GST and the 106th (2023) reserved one-third of seats for women.

Consider the following pairs (Amendment : What it did): 1. 101st Amendment (2016) : Land Boundary Agreement with Bangladesh (exchange of enclaves) 2. 42nd Amendment (1976) : Confirmed Parliament’s power to amend any part, including Fundamental Rights 3. 97th Amendment (2011) : Goods and Services Tax (GST) How many of the pairs given above are correctly matched?
- Only one pair
- Only two pairs
- All three pairs
- None of the pairs
Answer:उत्तर: None of the pairs
- Pair 1 is wrong: 101st Amendment (2016) is not Land Boundary Agreement with Bangladesh (exchange of enclaves). 101st Amendment (2016): Goods and Services Tax (GST).
- Pair 2 is wrong: 42nd Amendment (1976) is not Confirmed Parliament’s power to amend any part, including Fundamental Rights. 42nd Amendment (1976): Added "socialist", "secular" and "integrity" to the Preamble, and the Fundamental Duties (often called the mini-Constitution).
- Pair 3 is wrong: 97th Amendment (2011) is not Goods and Services Tax (GST). 97th Amendment (2011): Constitutional status for cooperative societies (Part IXB).
- So 0 of the 3 pairs are correctly matched.
