Worked examples

Example 1 · level 1

Capacitors of 4 μF and 12 μF are connected in series. Find the equivalent capacitance in μF.

Show solution
  1. C = 48 ÷ 16 = 3 μF.

Answer: 3

Example 2 · level 2

A 1 μF capacitor is charged to 12 V. Find the energy stored in it, in μJ (microjoules).

Show solution
  1. U = ½ × 1 × 144 = 72 μJ.

Answer: 72

Example 3 · level 3

Capacitors of 6 μF and 12 μF are connected in series across a 10 V battery. Find the charge on each capacitor in μC (correct to 2 decimal places).

Show solution
  1. C = 4 μF.
  2. Q = 4 × 10 = 40 μC on each.

Answer: 40
