Example 1 · level 1
An equiconvex glass lens has both radii of curvature 30 cm and refractive index 1.6. Find its focal length (in cm, correct to 2 decimal places).
Show solution
- 1/f = 0.6 × 2/30
- f = 30 ÷ 1.2 = 25 cm.
Answer: 25 cm
Lens maker's formula: 1/f = (n − 1)(1/R₁ − 1/R₂). For an equiconvex lens (R₁ = R, R₂ = −R): f = R/[2(n − 1)]. Prism at minimum deviation: n = sin((A + δm)/2) / sin(A/2).
